Chandrayaan 3: Vikram Lander's meticulous descent to pioneering lunar south pole touchdown

Chandrayaan-3, the propulsion spacecraft, is soaring high above the Moon, and here's what it's up to. Chandrayaan-3 is India's third mission to explore the Moon. It was sent into space by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on August 23. The mission's main goal was to safely land the Vikram Lander and the Pragyan Rover, which it was carrying, on to the Moon's surface. Only three countries have accomplished this feat so far. This mission follows the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which unfortunately failed to land softly on the Moon nearly four years ago in September 2019. However, the spacecraft is still orbiting the Moon.

The lander and Pragyan rover made some groundbreaking discoveries over the course of one lunar day (14 days on Earth). Now, the lander and the rover both have been put to sleep mode due to the absence of sunlight as their batteries will not be able to charge.

Just a few hours after the landing, the Pragyan rover made its way out of the lander and has been trundling across the region, exploring and conducting various experiments to understand it better. Yesterday, India inked its name in the pages of history by becoming the fourth nation to successfully land on the Moon, and the first country to reach its South Pole after successfully navigating the Chandrayaan-3's Vikram Lander to the lunar surface. Both the Pragyan rover and the Vikram lander will now begin conducting their own set of investigations and analyze the structural composition of the Moon. India's Chandrayaan-3, which launched on July 14 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre Second Launch Pad in Sriharikota, is India's second attempt to touch down on the Moon, following the last-minute failure of the Chandrayaan-2 mission. The GSLV Mark 3 launch vehicle, named ‘Bahubali', carried the hopes and dreams of 140 crore Indians as it made a 3.84 lakh kilometer journey to the Moon, which took approximately 42 days. The propulsion module successfully separated from the lander module on August 17, and it will continue in its orbit, carrying out its own series of experiments. 

ISRO is attempting to land a spacecraft on the moon's south pole, a mission that could advance India's space ambitions and expand knowledge of lunar water ice, potentially one of the moon's most valuable resources.

However, ISRO has expressed confidence that the lander will likely encounter no issues today.
