Capcom has a few massive franchises that take the market by storm with every release. However, when it comes to their biggest-selling franchise, Resident Evil, it’s always interesting to see just what game comes out on top. Today, we’re finding out that the franchise is still thriving, and one of the previous most significant installments has officially been dethroned. It looks like Resident Evil 2, the 2019 remake, has officially taken the top spot in regards to units sold. How long will this title last before it becomes overtaken?
Resident Evil 2 was already a big release when it first came out in 1998. However, fans quickly took up with the remake that offered a grand overhaul to the game. That title launched in 2019, and it’s still picked up today. Fans can’t get enough of the survival horror installment, and those who never played the original are stumbling upon this iconic game. It’s also a game that helped give credence to Capcom when it came to remaking the past Resident Evil titles. We’ve since seen remakes for Resident Evil 3 and, most recently, the Resident Evil 4 remake launched earlier this year.
But thanks to Eurogamer, we’re finding out that Capcom has updated some stats on their website. The new update offers a look at some of the biggest-selling games for the company as of their last count in June of this year. Their top spot remains Monster Hunter: World, which came in with a whopping 19 million units which was followed by Monster Hunter Rise, coming in at 13.20 million units. Taking up the third position is Resident Evil 2, with over 12.60 million units sold.
Previously, Resident Evil 7 held the position at 12.40 million units. But now Resident Evil 2 has become the franchise’s biggest seller. It would be interesting to see if there is a new Resident Evil game or remake that could top this installment. At any rate, we’re still waiting to see what the next game release for Resident Evil ends up being. We have the latest Resident Evil 4 remake, and fans are hopeful for some future DLC. The game was released without the Ada campaign, so it’s speculated that this mode would come out in a future DLC release. Meanwhile, we’re also waiting to see if the next major release will be another remake or if Capcom will continue on with a Resident Evil 9 installment.
