The critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 – seriously, have you seen those reviews! – will release later this year in Japan, courtesy of publisher Spike Chunsoft. The firm has snagged the rights to the ridiculously popular PS5 version, and domestic retailers have already started making product pages for digital and physical releases. It should be noted, in the west, the game is only available from the PS Store right now.
Obviously, this is big news for the PlayStation version of the game, as it’s another significant audience Larian Studios will be able to tap into. While there’s currently no release date attached to the Japanese edition, the developer announced pre-load times for Western markets overnight, and you can find out more through here. It’s also worth repeating, as we alluded to at the top of this article, this is currently one of the highest rated games of all time.
A true PlayStation veteran, Sammy's covered the world of PS gaming for years, with an enormous Trophy count to prove it. He also likes tennis games way more than you.
So this just begs the question as to why no physical release in the West?
Cool, I'm waiting for a physical version, so it's good to know they'll at least be an Asian version. They usually work internationally, here's hoping.
Knowing Lariat I'm expecting them to wait to be satisfied and the game fully patched before a western physical release. Maybe even limited run.
Be interesting to see if japan taps into this, westerners love jrpgs but not sure the love is reciprocated?
@sanderson72 Larian were the publishers and while Valve, GoG and Sony probably have tools and support for digital release a physical release would have extra costs and logistics.
Who knows if they can get a western partner who won't fleece them on PS and Xbox physical it may come later.
@Old-Red With its impending success I think a physical & likely a collectors edition is a good bet at some point.
I'm waiting for a physical version too, very frustrating this isn't available at launch, as I would've preordered and picked up day 1!
It's interesting that Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest can trace their origin back to Dungeons & Dragons but the western table RPG was always niche. I think «word of mouth» is universal and there's a lot of Japanese players that want to experience this phenomenon but it won't be as massive as Dragon Quest cause graphic design in BG3 is way too western. D&D core books had manga art design in Japan
Wasn't it bandai who handle divinity original sin 2 physical release in the west? Why don't they talk with them again?
There is a Collector's Edition already, @Sequel. I have both a PlayStation and a PC Collector's Edition on order/pre-order. Unfortunately both come with a digital

DECAPOLICE, the really cool looking detective RPG that was announced for PS5 and PS4 back in February, will have a relatively big role to play at Tokyo Game Show 2023. Developer Level-5 has announced its games lineup for the event — which takes place from the 21st September — and DECAPOLICE is basically the headline act.
Revealed last week, PlayStation Portal is Sony's own answer to remote play on PS5. In other words, it allows players to stream their PS5 games to an eight inch, 1080p screen with DualSense functionality attached to it. Retailing at $199.99 / £199.99 / €219.99, there's been a lot of discussion around whether it's a cost-effective solution to what seems to be a pretty niche problem.
Street Fighter 6’s first Character Pass is coming quicker than we initially anticipated, with the oddball A.K.I. arriving as early as 27th September. Capcom fully detailed the character with a huge trailer and PlayStation Blog post overnight, confirming that the slithery individual is able to inject poison into enemies who dare to stand too close to her. Consider her a new type of Poison, then, eh?
Anonymous;Code is the latest visual novel in the Science Adventure series. It takes place in 2037 Tokyo and focuses on Pollon Takaoka, a young hacker who's part of a group called Nakano Symphonies. Pollon doesn’t particularly enjoy being a hacker and isn’t even that skilled at it, but he does it along with his friend Cross to earn money and help people out.
according to newly registered ESRB ratings, it looks like Falcom's excellent JRPGs, Trails of Cold Steel 3 and Trails of Cold Steel 4, are coming to PS5. The two sequels, which released on western PS4s in 2019 and 2020 respectively, are published by NIS America outside of Japan — and we all know how much that company loves its PS5 ports.
Fans may be understandably fuming at Sony’s decision to increase annual PS Plus prices dramatically, but it’s had a positive impact on the firm’s share prices, with investors rubbing their hands over the prospect of increased profits. Bloomberg (paywall) reports that the Japanese giant’s shares increased by 3.4 per cent in Tokyo on Friday, the most they’ve gained in more than a month.
The long-awaited sequel, Dragon’s Dogma 2, will be fully playable at next month’s Tokyo Game Show – and even if you’re not visiting the enormous Japanese convention, you’ll be able to learn more about the release as part of the publisher’s Online Special Program on 21st September from 7PM PDT. According to a social media post, this will include “new gameplay and info” from director Hideaki Itsuno.
With the frankly flabbergasting PS Plus price increases announced overnight, Sony is in need of a win for its subscriptions – and a big one at that! One way it could curry favour with long-time members is by upgrading its PS2 emulator, allowing it to bring back classics from the early noughties alongside the PS1 and PSP titles it’s been adding as a PS Plus Premium perk.
Tokyo Game Show is coming back with a bang this year, and it looks like there’ll be a lot to look forward to throughout the extended weekend. Scheduled to start on 21st September through 24th September, organisers the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association have been billing this as the biggest TGS in some time, with the country’s iconic Makuhari Messe being filled to capacity this time.
A prequel to Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, the verbosely named Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten is a fairly typical Japanese RPG. It follows the story of a young warrior named Oshtor, who, after a strange meeting with a mysterious girl, sets off on a grand adventure to uncover the secrets of his family's history. So far, so very JRPG, but in its eastern-inspired fantasy world and penchant for decent plot twists, the game manages to carve out its own identity.
