A Baldur's Gate 3 player has used the game's character creator to design human versions of Karlach and Lae'zel, and the results are getting lots of responses online. Larian Studios' RPG was released last year, but gamers are still raving about it and experimenting with different builds, strategies, and choices during playthroughs. The scope of Baldur's Gate 3, along with all the different paths one can take, is certainly bringing fans back for more.
The choices in the game start before the game has even truly begun, with the character creator. Players have the chance to control pretty much everything about their in-game avatar, from fantasy race, appearance, class, and stats. Many players try to design their characters to maximize power in the game or create interesting narratives, and there are lots of tips for character creation in Baldur's Gate 3. One fan, however, chose to use the options available to generate alternate versions of other characters in the game.
On Reddit, a Baldur's Gate 3 player going by Makverus has shared images of characters they built that look like human versions of the companions Karlach and Lae'zel. In the game, Karlach is a Tiefling while Lae'zel is a Githyanki, which makes for interesting results once they've been converted to humans. Both characters are fan favorites, being recruitable early in the first act and among the strongest companions in Baldur's Gate 3. Players are split, however, on how they feel about these results.
Regarding Karlach, some Redditors were delighted by the change and thought the human version of the Tiefling looked great. Some, on the other hand, seemed to think being a Tiefling contributed to her mystique and fit her fiery personality. Human Lae'zel got similar results, with most fans finding the change cool and amusing, but being split on whether it made the character look better. Overall, it seems that human Karlach had more supporters, with her image prompting calls for the Lae'zel version that Makverus posted later.
It may be surprising to some that the Karlach version is getting more love, but it may reflect that Karlach appears to be a more popular character overall. Karlach is certainly a favorite of many, a top romance option for some, and even ranks among the best female characters of 2023.
The disparate receptions could also be because human Lae'zel looks a bit more strange in general. Being a Tiefling, Karlach was born to human parents and looks much like a human but with red skin and horns. Thus, her transformation looks more natural. As a completely different species, however, changing a Githyanki to a human results in something that some may see as crossing into the uncanny valley.
These aren't the first strange characters to come out
