Players looking to have custom party members in can do that if they are ready to sacrifice some key elements of the game. Custom party members also get access to classes and backgrounds similar to your character in the beginning. In a sense, it offers more dialogue options and some unique interaction outcomes.
It is worth pointing out that having a custom party will have some drawbacks. One of the biggest is that all voiced origin characters will be unavailable for your party. This will result in you missing their quests, romances, and key story beats. There is a workaround to temporally dismiss these extra characters and bring in companions of your choice.
When you start a new story, you can change the player's settings to let you create additional main characters. It is important to note that this method is only available for a new story, and you cannot add custom characters to an ongoing campaign. For an ongoing story, you can only recruit hirelings in , such as Zenith and Kerz, who are already named and have premade biographies of their own.
Making a second main character is as simple as starting in two-player split-screen mode. This requires two controllers, even if playing the PC version. The additional “players” can join a session as guests instead of using unique Steam IDs or PlayStation Network profiles. Upon start-up, a second copy of the main character, Tav, can be created. Take note that this custom character cannot be saved for future editing and must be finalized now.
One character can also be made as the unique Dark Urge origin story. However, this option will be locked for the rest of the newly made characters. It is ideal to use the Dark Urge as the first player character, or some cutscenes may be missed if they are absent from the team.
Making the third and fourth custom characters is a bit trickier. It requires starting up a second instance of and creating an online lobby. On PC, this is as simple as opening the game twice on a single machine and hosting a multiplayer session. For PlayStation 5, one will need to have a second console and use Share Play. Once all four members have joined the lobby, all custom characters can be created.
Upon gaining control of the party on the Nautiloid, save the new custom campaign, quit out, and restart in just single-player — or multiplayer if you are going to play with friends. All the custom-made versions of Tav will be retained.
The Withers in can respec characters for a low fee of 100 gold. However, this only allows changing classes and ability scores. He cannot alter anyone’s race, background, gender, appearance, or voice.
