When Baldur's Gate 3 left early access, everyone had to make new characters. This isn't surprising - so much had been added to almost every part of the game that it wouldn't have made sense to continue with a Tav made with the old mechanics in place. However, there was one class that actually had less content going into the fall launch: clerics.
In early access, custom clerics could choose Shar as their deity, drawing their strength from the Lady of Loss just like Shadowheart. This also gave the player unique dialogue options, reflecting the fact that they worship an evil-aligned deity. But for reasons not totally clear, this was cut from launch, leaving Shadowheart alone in her prayers.
Now, thanks to a mod, players are replaying Baldur's Gate 3 with this cut content restored, letting their clerics worship Shar once more. In clips of the mod in action, we can see the unique dialogue options this opens up with Shadowheart, revealing that the origin still works perfectly fine despite being inaccessible to most players.
In this clip, we can see a normally hidden dialogue choice that lets you express a desire to avenge the dead Sharrans you find in Act 1. Unsurprisingly, it would give you an approval boost with Shadowheart, something that's completely missed in usual play.
The mod used to make this possible is called Shar Unlocked and comes courtesy of Nexus Mods user Koriik. Players who have used the mod have provided a breakdown of all the other changes it introduces, and surprisingly, they're not limited to Act 1. This suggests that the Shar deity for clerics was in development for some time, and was intended to be a feature in the full release.
If you're looking to play through Baldur's Gate 3 as an evil lover, you can still choose to worship Lolth, Gruumsh, Tiamat, Vlaakith, and Talos.
One of the most notable differences is that it gives you the same immunity to the Shadow Curse that Shadowheart has. Of course, it means you can get mad at Selûne followers like Isobel too. How dare they try to help people? It also gives you some new dialogue in the Gauntlet of Shar, with Shadowheart referring to you both becoming Dark Justiciars. The mod doesn't actually allow this to happen, but it being mentioned implies it was meant to be an option.
We'll have to wait and see if the Shar path gets added back into the game in a future patch since it's clear that a lot of work went into it. However, it could be that Larian cut it for story reasons, since Shadowheart's own history with Shar and other Sharrans could have complicated matters.
