Obsidian Entertainment is working on improvements to combat. This process was reportedly ongoing during Microsoft’s Developer Direct last month. However, the improvements will address some of the fans’ concerns about the upcoming RPG.

The directors of Avowed have shed more light on its gameplay in a new 25-minute video.
In the ‘extended gameplay breakdown’ video, game director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo go into detail on some of the separate game mechanics and discuss the development team’s philosophies for the game.
The video, which can be seen embedded above or on the official Xbox YouTube channel, opens with Patel explaining why she feels the game feels like a typical Obsidian title.
“For me, it’s really about our player-centric approach to roleplay,” she explains.
“Our studio’s motto is ‘Your World, Your Way’, and so the way we really approach choice, and consequence, and everything else, is just giving players opportunities to define who they are in this world, how they want to behave, what fantasy [and] what challenges they want to undertake.”
The video also shows off Shatterscarp, which is the third area in the game, with Patel pointing out that a number of the quests in the game are “entirely discoverable, which means they’re entirely missable”.
The video goes on to detail such topics as combat and weapon loadouts, crowd control, elemental damage, branching dialogues and companions.
Avowed, which is set in the same universe as Obsidian’s previous RPG, Pillars of Eternity, is due to be released in Fall 2024.
“Expanding the universe that we created for the original Pillars of Eternity games, Avowed brings a new perspective, a new way to fight, and a new land to explore in the world of Eora,” Obsidian studio head Feargus Urquhart told Xbox Wire last year.
“The Pillars games are near and dear to us and we can’t wait to share Avowed with everyone next year.
“In Avowed, you’ll explore the Living Lands, a plagued, wild island set in the world of Eora. The Living Lands are full of mysteries and secrets, danger and adventure, and choice and consequences.”

Don't worry, you don't need to know anything about Obsidian's massive CRPGs before you dive headlong into Avowed.
Obsidian Entertainment is hammering away at its fantasy-with-firearms roleplaying game Avowed, due this year, which the developers hope can surpass the "black-and-white" moral binary.
Obsidian has confirmed that Avowed won't feature a traditional approval mechanic for its companions, meaning they won't abandon you if make the wrong decision. Sadly, it also seems to suggest that romances won't be a thing, either.
Excitement for Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming action-RPG Avowed has no doubt ramped up since it was shown off at Developer Direct. Since then, some extended footage has been doing the rounds, with an in-depth discussion about the game from its two directors.
Obsidian Entertainment gave fans a closer look at Avowed during last week’s Xbox Direct, showcasing combat, exploration, dialogue and more during the presentation.
If you play as a pacifist in role-playing games, stealth titles or immersive sims and prefer not to kill anyone, then Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed may not be for you. Unlike the developer’s previous tile, The Outer Worlds, director Carrie Patel told PC Gamer, “This isn’t a game where you’re gonna have a pure pacifist run.”
Palworld director Takuro Mizobe did his homework on the open world survival crafting genre that spawned his Early Access hit.
Xbox and Obsidian Entertainment have revealed extended gameplay footage of Avowed, spilling new details about the aquatic Shatterscarp region as well as other key combat features. After its debut gameplay trailer went live as part of Xbox's summer showcase last June, Avowed appeared again at Xbox's recent Developer Direct alongside other big Xbox games like MachineGames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Ninja Theory's Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.
One of the key features of Helldivers 2 is The Galactic War. Super Earth’s territories are under siege on all fronts by monstrous enemies hell-bent on destroying humanity’s way of life. From the war table aboard your ship, your team can watch as the conflict unfolds and take part in battles across the universe. Do your part to advance the frontlines in the name of Freedom and Managed Democracy.
Nintendo has released a new trailer for Princess Peach Showtime, which shows off new transformations.
Obsidian's Avowed is a game for the more indecisive or changeable RPG player, with no "enforced" classes and an emphasis on easily respeccing and experimenting with different combinations of weapons and abilities. Or at least, that's my overall takeaway from a new Xbox podcast interview featuring game director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo. In the video, the pair delve a little deeper into last week's Xbox Developer Direct showcase and how the game compares to their previous Pillars of Eternity games, which are set in the same world.
