If you want to flash your smartphone rather than pulling out a driver's license at the airport, three more states this week added support for the functionality on Android.
Colorado, Georgia, and Arizona have officially added support for digital IDs in Google Wallet. All three previously added support for Apple Wallet, but digital IDs will now work on Android devices, too. Maryland is the only other state to support both wallets; it added Apple Wallet support in 2022 and Google Wallet support in June 2023.
If you live in any of those states, you can add your ID to Google Wallet right now. Simply open the app, click the Add to Wallet button, select ID card, and tap Get Started. From there, select your state and follow the instructions to get your ID card added.
For now, IDs are accepted at select TSA checkpoints. It's possible to use a digital ID while buying things like alcohol, but it's up to the individual shop as to whether or not they accept it. In addition, it's a good idea to keep your physical ID card on you, since digital IDs are generally considered an additional rather than primary form of ID. You'll still need the physical card at traffic stops as well, at least for some states.
Nearly 30 states are actively working on supporting digital IDs, according to 9to5Mac. Thus, it's likely that we'll see a spike in adoption over the next few years. Samsung Wallet is also getting in on the action, with Arizona and Iowa being the first states to roll it out later this year. (That will make Arizona the first state to support digital IDs from Apple, Google, and Samsung.)
In addition, there is wider support for digital IDs outside of the mobile space. Stores that have age-restricted items and some law enforcement agencies are rolling out digital ID scanners that will allow folks to flash their smartphone instead of digging in their wallets for an ID. In Colorado, state troopers tested digital IDs and found that it led to a 10% reduction in processing time during traffic stops with the proper equipment, the Denver Gazette reports.

World of Warcraft: The War Within is the next expansion set to release for the decades-long-running MMORPG. Touted as during the BlizzCon 2023 Opening Ceremony part of the culmination of nearly twenty years of Warcraft history, The War Within is the first of three chapters that will see the resolution to narrative threads that have been dangling for years. And like any expansion, it will feature new areas for players to discover, along with more than a handful of dungeons and encounters they can tackle at varying difficulties.
Last week, a forecast revealed that three coronal mass ejections had a probability of striking the Earth early this week. The forecast had given different probabilities based on how different circumstances can affect the intensity of the resultant solar storm. It turned out that in a rare coincidence, the conditions were met to spark the worst-possible solar event, and a G3-class storm ensued yesterday, November 6. While a lot of it has subsided, the solar storm event does not look like it is going to subside anytime soon. A stream of solar winds is headed for the Earth, and it can spark another round of solar storms, that can reach the intensity of G2-class, which is possible today, November 7.

How do you make a movie about the opioid crisis fun? Can you? Should you? The answer to these questions — as proposed by director David Yates (emerging from Harry Potter jail, where he’s been since the mid-2000s), screenwriter Wells Tower, star Emily Blunt, and Netflix — is Pain Hustlers, a fast-moving pharma drama that attempts to blend an earnest, relatable issue movie with the seductive excess of a Scorsese-lite true-crime roller coaster. It works, up to a point. Carried by a typically strong Blunt performance, Pain Hustlers is both watchable and eye-opening, even though its dramatic impulses do kind of cancel each other out.
