Apple introduced a 12-inch MacBook in 2015, but it featured poor performance and did not hold up to the latest software updates. The device was discontinued in 2019, potentially due to lower-than-expected demand. The device was powered by Intel's Core M series of chips, and to be fair, the performance was nothing compared to Apple's M series of chips. As Apple transitioned to its custom silicon, rumors of a budget MacBook surfaced.
