French authorities have received a software update from Apple for its iPhone 12 and are reviewing it as a fix for a radiation issue, a source at the French digital ministry told Reuters on Tuesday.

One of the biggest DIY repair sites, iFixit, has revised its repairability score on the iPhone 14, explaining its software  «now limits many basic iPhone repairs» because it requires would be repairers to have replacement parts remotely authenticated by Apple.  

Apple, with the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup, announced the transition of its charging port from Lightning to USB-C. The change was done to meet the European Union's new regulation regarding standard charging cables. However, in Europe, almost at the same time Apple was launching the iPhone 15, the iPhone 12 came into the spotlight due to concerns raised by France regarding its electromagnetic emissions. An unexpected concern was raised about the iPhone 12 radiation threat by France's National Frequency Agency (ANFR). On the same day as Apple's fall product announcements, ANFR informed Apple that the iPhone 12 exceeded European Union regulations for Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which measures the rate at which a human body absorbs radiation from a device.

Delivery times for the just-unveiled iPhone 15 Pro quickly slipped until November for some configurations, suggesting that demand is strong for the high-end versions of Apple Inc.'s new lineup.

Apple pledged on Friday to update software on iPhone 12s in France to settle a dispute over radiation levels, but concerns in other European countries signalled it may have to take similar action elsewhere.

To prevent the iPhone 12 from being banned in France, Apple is reportedly working to release a software update that is said to bring down the radiation levels to accommodate the request of French regulators. Before being officially released back in 2020, it was reported that Apple knew about this problem and instructed its employees to stay quiet about the whole thing. It does not appear that there will be any legal repercussions against the California-based giant this time.

Alongside the iPhone 15 announcement, Apple was also juggling with news that France intended to initiate a recall of the iPhone 12 due to the latter exceeding recommended radiation levels. Even though the company has denied these claims, one report states that Apple, in fact, knew about these risks and still told its employees to stay mum when asked about them.

Belgium said on Thursday it would review potential health risks linked to Apple's iPhone 12, raising the prospect that more European countries might ban the model after France ordered a halt to sales due to breaches of radiation exposure limits.

Apple is ditching its in-house iPhone charging plug and falling in line with the rest of the tech industry by adopting a more widely used connection standard. A big part of the reason is a European Union common charging rule that's coming soon for the 27-nation bloc.
