Over six months ago, independent developer Ascendant Studios promised to bring AMD FSR 3 to the console versions of Immortals of Aveum. No console game so far includes any frame generation technique, making this a world-first.
After a fairly long time spent in total silence on the subject, Ascendant Studios has now told Eurogamer's Digital Foundry that in just a few weeks, it will release the 1.0.6.4 patch with AMD FSR 3's frame generation component for consoles. The developer worked alongside Enduring Games, which also helped develop the base game, to ship this new feature. Enduring has a long track record of ports and co-development, including Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5, Godfall for PlayStation 5 and the Epic Games Store, Knockout City for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, the cross-platform play update for Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, cross-platform play & Nintendo Switch console support for Tribes of Midgard, multiplatform support for New Tales From the Borderlands, and Bugsnax for the Nintendo Switch system.
AMD FSR 3 was already released on PC, though it came with severe stuttering and frame pacing issues. Digital Foundry reports that Ascendant Studios and Enduring Games plan to improve the implementation by extending support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) monitors and TVs on both PC and consoles, which should improve frame pacing and reduce occurrences of judder or screen tears.
Today, the developer also dropped update 1.0.6.3, which adds support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays on consoles. The PC version of Immortals of Aveum is reportedly getting HDR support too, albeit with a later update. Meanwhile, PC gamers can always use NVIDIA's RTX HDR or alternative like Windows AutoHDR, Kaldaien's Special K, and Pumbo/Lilium HDR.
Immortals of Aveum didn't do well financially, leading to nearly half of Ascendant being laid off. However, founder and director Bret Robbins recently said sales have improved in the last few months, fueling hope that the game may yet be redeemed.
