A timeworn classic receives a thoughtful reboot in THQ Nordic’s upcoming . Developed by Pieces Interactive – a studio arguably best known for co-op action-RPG sequel – the new release reimagines 1992’s formative survival horror forebear, studding its homage with references but delivering a modern presentation. delivers a fun horror experience with a narrative that gets better as it goes, but its puzzles are mostly simplistic and its combat sluggish to a fault.
The IP has changed hands three times thus far, with various studios and publishers exploring their own takes on the action-tinged bayou horror journey. The original release by Infogrames proved to be a watershed moment in PC gaming, even having founded the fixed-camera horror shtick, a standard which would later be used by the likes of and countless others.
Alone in the Dark is a serviceable remake that misses the mark on combat but makes up for it with a moody atmosphere and interesting puzzles.
In that respect, inspiration has come full circle, with movement and combat here largely modeled after that of (which set its own new genre standards). Furthermore, the new ’s concept ultimately feels less like a haunted house of ghouls and more a kind of horror dreamworld hub, a space which connects set pieces only periodically grounded in mundane reality.
Inspector Edward Carnby drives Emily Harwood to Derceto manor, an early-20th-century homespun asylum in the Louisiana wilds. Prompted by the receipt of a distressing letter, Emily is checking up on her uncle Jeremy, whose fits of madness relegated him to Derceto’s supervisory care many years prior. Carnby joins her as hired protection, and to bear witness in case anything nefarious has befallen Emily’s dear relative.
While the staging of Alone in the Dark’s introduction acts as pure homage to that of the original, the narrative sharply diverts from there. Rather than happening upon a house abandoned of people and packed with monsters, the new game introduces a clutch of unique characters at home in Derceto, including suspicious head honcho Dr. Gray, Creole orderlies Baptiste and Loretta, and Grace, a classically creepy horror film child weirdo.
Luckily, Derceto's assortment of personalities are a pleasure to meet, and most of them develop worthy character arcs over the course of the game as their secrets are revealed. They also feature a few lines of unique dialogue for each protagonist, meaning that the game technically offers two tracks for anyone eager to return for a second go-round.
As advertised in the game’s promotional materials, Edward and Emily are gamely portrayed by two familiar Hollywood names: David Harbour (, ) and Jodie Comer (, ). As video game voice acting performances go, both are

The new reboot of Alone in the Dark is here, but the game still has a lot of old-school survival horror flavor, which means a lot of puzzles, secrets, and other mysteries to unravel. But don’t worry, we here at Wccftech are here to guide you past the tricky bits.
Another hectic week is in the bag, and I’ve been playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 so I could collect the video footage for our review and obviously not for any kind of enjoyment. It is definitely very, very fun though, even if you have to look out for the odd disappearing Pawn on PS5. Other than that it’s been New Star GP, Unicorn Overlord, Street Fighter 6, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and some Songs of Silence for my gaming week.
Without Alone in the Dark, quite simply, there is no survival horror as we know it today. Way back in 1992, when the original game led us down the haunted hallways of the Derceto mansion for the first time, the impact that ill-fated journey would have on the landscape of video games could not have been fully understood.
Alone in the Dark is the definition of slow burn horror – something that’s pretty much a given when playing, reading, or watching anything that takes heavy inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. A modern take of the 1992 classic created by Infogrames, it’s easy to see why THQ wanted to take a punt at reanimating the series, especially when you consider the back-to-back successes Capcom has enjoyed with its recent string of Resident Evil remakes. After all, it was Alone in the Dark that inspired Shinji Mikami in creating the very first Resident Evil all those years ago. Both games took place in a sprawling manor complex teeming with jump scares and puzzles, though Alone in the Dark veered more towards the occult and committing to a period setting.
The Alone in the Dark franchise is no stranger to attempted reboots and revivals, and we’ve got another one of those on our hands now. Developer Pieces Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic’s Alone in the Dark, an expanded reimagining of the series’ first instalment, is out now for PC and consoles. Check out its launch trailer below.
