Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second chapter in the Final Fantasy VII reboot trilogy, bringing players out of Midgar for the first time and allowing them to explore iconic locations from the original game. It picks up after the events of 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake with the party having just left the city and preparing to track down Sephiroth, meaning there's still plenty of story to tell.
Of course, all of the characters from Remake return in Rebirth, but there's a lot of time left to meet new characters, too. This sequel expands the roster to include a total of three more members--Yuffie, Red XIII, and Cait Sith--the latter of which hasn't been seen in battle at all until now.
Cid and Vincent will appear during this outing, though it's worth noting that they won't be joining as playable characters until the next game. However, fans will get a chance to briefly play as two characters that weren't playable in the 1997 original--the heroic Zack and main antagonist Sephiroth--in scenarios that highlight their importance to this fresh take on the Final Fantasy VII timeline.
Here are all of the playable characters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Main character Cloud unsurprisingly returns in this middle chapter of the Final Fantasy VII reboot, and he's still wielding his iconic Buster Sword and giving off his usual moody vibes as he moves closer to understanding his mysterious past.
Cloud's childhood best friend, Tifa, is back for round two to expand on her complicated, traumatic backstory and bring plenty of martial arts for laying the smackdown on enemies.
Perhaps one of gaming's most beloved characters, the kind and heartwarming Aerith makes a return as a mage archetype who is barreling towards a potentially earth-shattering climax in part two of this story.
Everyone's favorite swear-happy tough guy, Barret, is back in action with no shortage of bullets to unload from his gun arm--but he also faces some devastating blasts from the past in this middle chapter.
After a guest appearance near the end of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Red XIII is fully playable in Rebirth with tons of flair to go around--and he also gets a much-needed look into his origins during this part of the story.
Though she was playable in Final Fantasy VII Remake's Intergrade DLC, the wonderfully mischievous Yuffie joins the main party in Rebirth with a lot of energy and a chance to prove she's more than just a materia thief.
Cait Sith marks Rebirth's first character to have not been seen in combat at all yet in the rebooted trilogy, and though long-term fans may find themselves skeptical of his intentions, this robotic cat riding atop a moogle brings joyful and cartoonish fun to fights.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players will get to experience an all-new storyline when they reach the Costa del Sol segment of the game. With the game releasing in about a month, Square Enix has been revealing new information about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to keep fans excited.
Final Fantasy 14 is giving all players a free Fantasia during Dawntrail to help them adapt to the new graphics update coming in the expansion. While the exact details are still being worked out, all Final Fantasy 14 fans can expect to get one of these cash shop items for free later this year.
With a little more than a week left before the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the next four playable characters have potentially leaked. According to the rumor, the next four playable characters will all be released in the first year post-launch, and they are Joker, Mrs. Freeze, Lawless, and Deathstroke. In all fairness, it has already been confirmed that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is adding the Joker, but the leaker's initial post dates back to last year – long before the Clown Prince's in-game reveal.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi reckons chocobo smell like horses.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has revealed what the infamously stinky Chocobos actually smell like, and the answer isn't too surprising.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has revealed how Red XIII can even ride a Chocobo despite not having opposable thumbs and previously struggling to stand in the original Final Fantasy 7.
For the record, we didn’t plan two stories about items you can get for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to come in back-to-back days. Life decided to have a little fun with us, and we don’t mind. Yesterday, we discussed how Square Enix Reward Program members could get a special glitter globe featuring the Gold Saucer from the upcoming RPG. It was cute and adorable, and we’re sure some of you have already subscribed to the program so you can get it or are cashing in points to ensure you get it. But, if you’re looking for something a bit more “substantial,” then perhaps Amazon is where you go to get the game.
When it comes to video games, many who play them don’t just want the “memories” of playing them; they want items in the real world that’ll help them remember those memories in a different way. Pre-order items are a big deal in this respect, as people will pay out the nose to get unique items that can only be bought through these special deals. Square Enix decided to up the ante with the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth by offering its Reward Members the chance to get a special glitter globe featuring the Gold Saucer from the upcoming title.
I don’t know what it is about the Final Fantasy 7 battle theme, but it always gets my blood pumping. Square Enix released a new trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth titled Destined for Rebirth. The trailer focuses on showcasing part 2 of the series which focuses on Cloud and his crew traveling across the planet in search of Sephiroth.
Following the events of 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII have escaped the confines of Midgar and gotten rid of the Whispers, meaning the possibilities as they step out into the vast world depicted in the middle portion of the original Final Fantasy VII are endless. In contrast to the corridor-heavy structure of Remake, the openness of Rebirth is immediately refreshing, but as I found out during both my hands-on and hands-off demos, the improvements don't even come close to stopping there.
During an interview with Square Enix’s Naoki Yoshida, the Final Fantasy XIV director and XVI producer has revealed that he thinks it might be better for a younger generation of developers to pick up the mantle and work on Final Fantasy XVII.
