Alan Wake 2 still hasn't recouped its development costs despite establishing itself as Remedy Entertainment's fastest-selling title to date, the Finnish developer has revealed. That disclosure was accompanied by some specific sales figures for Alan Wake 2, which look promising enough to suggest that the game will manage to break even in the near future.
While Alan Wake is nowadays a cult classic, its sales were modest enough that Remedy spent years searching for funding for its sequel. The project finally entered active production in August 2019, after the studio struck a publishing agreement with Epic Games that also included Alan Wake Remastered, released two years later. However, Alan Wake Remastered did not sell as well as Remedy hoped it would.
The second game in the series appears to be doing much better by comparison, with Remedy just announcing that Alan Wake 2 had sold 1 million copies as of year-end 2023, and another 300,000 units over the following two months. That makes it the fastest-selling title in the studio's history, with the group specifying that Alan Wake 2 over 50% more copies in its first two months than its last flagship title, Control, managed in its initial four months on the market. Even so, the project has yet to break even, although Remedy assured investors that «a significant part» of its development and marketing expenses has already been recouped.
The studio also revealed that its latest title has sold three times more digital copies than Control over the aforementioned periods. This achievement was helped by the fact that Alan Wake 2 was a digital exclusive. Remedy previously attributed the decision to forego the game's physical release to a desire to deliver a AAA experience at a reduced price. For reference, Alan Wake 2 retails at $59.99 on consoles and $49.99 on PC, a $10 discount compared to the typical contemporary big-budget games on those platforms. The game still appears to be on course to break even sometime this year, with Remedy saying it expects it to enjoy «excellent long tail sales.»
A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well.
In late 2023, Finnish outlet Helsingin Sanomat reported that Alan Wake 2's budget was in the ballpark of $75 million, of which some $21.5 million was earmarked for marketing, citing analyst estimates. 1.3 million sold units ostensibly generated around $60 million in revenue, once storefront cuts are accounted for. The fact that this figure still isn't enough to recoup the costs of Alan Wake 2 underlines how AAA game development has gotten significantly more expensive in recent times. Remedy's past disclosures suggested that Epic Games Publishing would be taking 100% of

In a rare move, Remedy Entertainment has lowered the minimum PC system requirements for Alan Wake 2. The unexpected change arrived as part of the game's latest patch that Alan Wake 2 players can download as of March 6.
Alan Wake 2 is a game that fans waited years to see released into the marketplace. It’s also a game that Remedy Entertainment was partial to seeing created. However, after going through a few other projects, the studio managed to get a sequel into the marketplace. If you’re a fan of the first game, then chances are you already played through the sequel. But if your PC was holding you back from enjoying this game, we have good news.
Alan Wake 2's hefty system requirements shocked many PC gamers when they were announced last year. The requirements noted that you needed at least an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 or an AMD Radeon RX 6600 GPU to run the game at 1080p / 30 frames per second (FPS), with no support for older GPUs such as Nvidia's GTX 10-series. Roughly four months after its release, Remedy has released a new patch that lowers the minimum PC system requirements and allows older PC gaming rigs to run the game.
Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2 has received an update, and while it doesn’t add the long-awaited Photo Mode (coming in Spring), it does adjust the minimum PC requirements. Or the GPU requirements, at least.
When it launched last October, Alan Wake 2 was noted as a superb follow-up to its cult Xbox 360 predecessor. Visually, it was something to behold. However, being quite a graphically demanding game meant people with older hardware were left out—until now.
Alan Wake 2 is a wild ride in nearly every sense of the word, and to match the game's oddball energy, composer Petri Alanko used some, err, unconventional 'toys' to bring the nightmarish soundtrack to life.
After 13 long years, Remedy’s Alan Wake finally received a sequel, and it has been a success, managing to sell a million units by December 2023.
Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that Alan Wake 2 will be adding its long-awaited Photo Mode as part of a free update «somewhere around spring» of this year. Survival-horror game Alan Wake 2 was released last year to critical acclaim and won multiple awards at The Game Awards 2023. Remedy has released multiple updates for the game since launch, including a rather substantial one that added a New Game Plus mode.
From New Game Plus to Chapter Select, Remedy Entertainment has added a few notable new features to Alan Wake 2 with free updates since its release in October, and the developer has now confirmed that another one of those is on the way.
Fans want a physical edition of Remedy’s horror sequel Alan Wake 2, but the critically acclaimed game isn’t exactly struggling on digital storefronts. The title has now sold 1.3 million copies worldwide, making it the fastest-selling title in the Finnish firm’s history. It previously reached one million units by the end of December 2023, so it looks like word of mouth has been good through the first two months of 2024.
Remedy Entertainment recently announced that Alan Wake 2 has sold over 1.3 million units worldwide, becoming the studio’s fastest-selling game to date, and though the acclaimed survival horror title has yet to fully recoup the money that was poured into its development and marketing, it looks like it’s gotten off to a strong enough start that Remedy is already planning for more Alan Wake in the future.
