14 Must-See Games from PAX West 2023

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the October 2023 Monthly Games lineup for PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers. All titles will be available from October 3 to November 6.

Ocean Drive Studio, the team behind the story-focused tactical RPG Lost Eidolons has concocted a spinoff of their popular franchise with a new combat-oriented take titled Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch. As someone who was unfamiliar with the series, I wasn’t quite sure what I was walking into, but once I sat down for my demo with Creative Director Jin Sang Kim, I realized that, even had I known what to expect, nothing would have prepared me for the challenges that await.

In 2021, Bandai Namco’s Tales of Arise took home the award for Best Role Playing Game at The Game Awards. Since its release, it has gone on to sell over 2 million copies across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

With so many great RPG’s hitting the scene lately, last year’s award-winning game Elden Ring feels almost like a distant memory. The Soulslike subgenre hasn’t stopped, however, and nestled in prime real-estate on the PAX show floor was Jyamma Games’ next offering, Enotria: The Last Song. PAX West was filled with dozens of games, from many remarkable development studios. Conventions like PAX are great for teams of all sizes to showcase what they’ve been working on, from single developer studios to large scale teams with award winning titles. I was equipped with a sniper rifle and positioned high above a courtyard. Enemies began bursting from behind cover and scattering across the area. I easily picked them off one by one but instinctively panicked when two of them burst into the room I was hiding in. If I've learned anything from video games, it's that sniper rifles don't work well from up close. But to my surprise, Long Gone Days isn't just a pixel-based sniper simulator. It's also a turn-based combat game with different weapons, abilities, and items. It's a lot more than what it appears on the surface. 

Yesterday (Tuesday, September 12), it was announced that the game engine Unity will soon begin charging developers a monthly fee based on the number of installs their games have, in a move that has left many indie studios upset and frustrated.
