PAX West was back in full force in 2023. As one of North America's largest video game shows, the popular fan convention allows the gaming audience to sample some of the next big games, and smaller surprises, set for release this Fall and in 2024. With other adjacent events happening during PAX West 2023, such as Nintendo Live and The Mix's Media Indie Exchange, the offerings this year featured a wide breadth of pulse-pounding action games and other titles that went for a more cozy and chill vibe to help set a different mood.
In this roundup of cool games, we're spotlighting some of the most exciting and eye-grabbing games we saw during PAX West 2023 and other adjacent events.
Dungeons of Hinterberg Developer: Microbird Games | Publisher: Curve Games | Release Date: TBD 2024
What makes Dungeons of Hinterberg such a charming game is that it really sticks firmly to its "cozy" take on a dungeon crawler. Set in a scenic Austrian town where mysterious dungeons and monsters have sprouted up, you play as a young adventurer named Luisa, who joins other explorers worldwide to uncover treasure and find the source of these strange events. Blending elements of an action-RPG dungeon crawler with a social sim, the protagonist makes daring dives into puzzle- and monster-filled dungeons and then returns to town to bond with their friends over drinks and other activities.
Dungeons of Hinterberg is a type of role-playing game that emphasizes establishing a bond with the setting and its characters while giving some exciting moments of action as you delve further into the mystery. Itss chill vibe and friendly atmosphere makes it a unique type of adventure experience that'll give players a reason to want to make time for its character before making that daring jump back into the unknown.
Animal Well Developer: Shared Memory | Publisher: Bigmode | Release Date: TBD 2024
Animal Well is an eerie adventure game that left a lasting impression on me after I finished playing it. As something of an experimental 2D puzzle-platformer, you're placed in the role of a strange, newly hatched critter who must brave the depths of a bizarre and hostile world. You'll need to use your wits, some gadgets found in the ruins, and quick thinking while avoiding traps, monsters, and other hazards to survive your journey. It's a game that made 2D exploration feel unnerving, yet there was a certain beauty to be seen in Animal Well's dangerous world. The stunning atmosphere and retro 2D visuals intrigued me and made me want to explore more of what Animal Well's setting and minimalist story had to offer.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Developer & Publisher: Nintendo | Release Date: October 20, 2023

Ocean Drive Studio, the team behind the story-focused tactical RPG Lost Eidolons has concocted a spinoff of their popular franchise with a new combat-oriented take titled Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch. As someone who was unfamiliar with the series, I wasn’t quite sure what I was walking into, but once I sat down for my demo with Creative Director Jin Sang Kim, I realized that, even had I known what to expect, nothing would have prepared me for the challenges that await.
In 2021, Bandai Namco’s Tales of Arise took home the award for Best Role Playing Game at The Game Awards. Since its release, it has gone on to sell over 2 million copies across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
With so many great RPG’s hitting the scene lately, last year’s award-winning game Elden Ring feels almost like a distant memory. The Soulslike subgenre hasn’t stopped, however, and nestled in prime real-estate on the PAX show floor was Jyamma Games’ next offering, Enotria: The Last Song. Should this song be added to your Wishlist?
Starfield was comfortably No.1 across Europe during its launch week, GSD data shows.
PAX West was filled with dozens of games, from many remarkable development studios. Conventions like PAX are great for teams of all sizes to showcase what they’ve been working on, from single developer studios to large scale teams with award winning titles. It’s very easy to get caught up in all the glitz of the convention and miss some of the most exciting upcoming games, so our team reflected on the abundance of games they played and have shared their favorites that you should add to your Wishlist in our PAX Picks.
I was equipped with a sniper rifle and positioned high above a courtyard. Enemies began bursting from behind cover and scattering across the area. I easily picked them off one by one but instinctively panicked when two of them burst into the room I was hiding in. If I've learned anything from video games, it's that sniper rifles don't work well from up close. But to my surprise, Long Gone Days isn't just a pixel-based sniper simulator. It's also a turn-based combat game with different weapons, abilities, and items. It's a lot more than what it appears on the surface.
Yesterday (Tuesday, September 12), it was announced that the game engine Unity will soon begin charging developers a monthly fee based on the number of installs their games have, in a move that has left many indie studios upset and frustrated.

Hero shooters like Overwatch and Apex Legends have certainly become popular lately. For the VR players out there, there haven’t been any exceptional standouts in the Arena Multiplayer Online Game genre. That’s where X8 steps in. Prior to PAX I had never heard of X8, but after a lengthy and thorough demo session, it might just be my go-to VR experience.
