Apple is working on a new version of the Apple TV, which could potentially come with a built-in camera for FaceTime and additional applications, as per the latest reports. We have been hearing details on the product for a long time, and rumors regarding it have surfaced again. While Apple already has a mechanism in place to use FaceTime on the Apple TV, it requires an iPhone or iPad, which can be used as a webcam for the bigger display.
Apple is working on a new Apple TV model with a FaceTime camera and "gesture-based controls"
As mentioned, Apple is possibly working on a new Apple TV model that will include a camera built into the set-top box, eliminating the need to use a dedicated iPhone or iPad as the webcam. Last year, with the release of tvOS 17, Apple TV users gained the new FaceTime app, which allowed them to make video calls through their television. While FaceTime makes a lot of sense for Apple TV, as it is attached to a bigger display, the company has remained shy about introducing video calling capabilities until last year.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg states in his latest Power On newsletter that the forthcoming Apple TV model will feature "gesture-based controls," potentially for controlling reactions on FaceTime, as the company could be working on an identical approach as it did with iOS and iPadOS. Gurman did not provide additional details on what the gestures will be used for on the Apple TV and if gestures would be able to control the device on a system level.
In iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14, Apple already offers gesture-based controls in FaceTime that allow users to express with animated 3D effects. Henceforth, we can presume that FaceTime on the Apple TV will work similarly, but on a much bigger screen, but it remains to be if the analyst is referring to the same reactions instead of gestures for controlling the app's interface,
Gurman did not highlight when users should expect a new Apple TV and if the device will come with additional improvements, such as a faster processor or any design variations. The company is also working on a new HomePod version, which will house a display for better controls and displaying information. Do you think an Apple TV with a built-in FaceTime camera makes sense? Apple argues that 8GB of RAM is more than enough in the base variants of the new Macs, as users complain of stagnancy. However, Apple was not always this reluctant, especially under the leadership of Steve Jobs. However, when Tim Cook took over, Apple's regular upgrade cycle for base memory stopped, according to a post on Mastodon. While there are various reasons for Apple's approach, users have been demanding that the company should increase the base RAM on Macs for a long time.
We have recently covered that the hype surrounding the Vision Pro has cooled down and demand for the headset is far lower than when it launched. The Apple Vision Pro did not pan out to be a hot seller as it was originally anticipated by the company which is why shipment orders have been cut down. Potentially, the lower-than-expected demand is due to the hefty price tag of the Vision Pro, as it is one of the most expensive mixed reality headsets on the market right now.
The Vision Pro saw daylight last year at the WWDC event, but it took its sweet time to hit the shelves as the company was creating the necessary hype and preparing developers to create proper use cases for the headset. While the reviews shared positive feedback, the possibilities for the device are endless as developers work to expand the Vision Pro's applications in the real world. We are now hearing that an orthopedic surgeon in Brazil used the Apple Vision Pro to successfully perform surgery on a patient's shoulder.
This year's iPhone 16 lineup will get some notable improvements in design and how users use the device, as the company aims to integrate generative AI technology with the release of iOS 18 later this year. Apple is keen to increase the screen size of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max this year, while the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will house the same display as the current models. A prominent analyst is now claiming that the iPhone 17 Plus will come with a smaller display size that will sit between the screen size of the 'Pro' models.
Aggro Crab, the indie developer behind the colorful Soulslike Another Crab's Treasure, has expressed its fears that it may face sudden competition around its release thanks to Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Hades 2 developer Supergiant Games has recently announced that the upcoming game will have a “technical test” period in which gamers can apply to play early. Not only will this short test period help the developers iron out bugs, but it may also allow some lucky players to play Hades 2 before it hits Early Access.
Using some particularly juicy screenshots from the new live-action show, one dedicated Fallout fan has taken it upon themselves to accurately map out all of the known vaults, making it possible to see if there's canonically a vault near you in a post-apocalyptic alternate universe.
I sort of reject that the Fallout TV show has Easter eggs hidden in it because it, as a whole, is the equivalent of one of those fancy Hotel Chocolat ostrich-sized patisserie collection bastards that cost 40 quid. However. Eagle-eyed viewers of the Fallout show noted that episode 6 gives you a number for Valt-Tec that you can actually get in touch with - 213-25-VAULT (or, 213-258-2858). Charges apply, as well as international codes if you're outside the US, which makes it 001-213-258-2858.
iOS 18 is reported to be Apple's biggest update for the iPhone as the company is planning a swarm of new AI-related utilities on a system level. There have been numerous reports highlighting how the iPhone could benefit from generative AI and what advancements it could bring to Siri and Spotlight Search. While the company is gradually expanding its efforts to bring the technology to the older and newer models of the iPhone, a prominent analyst claims that the first wave of AI features will not rely on AI cloud servers on the iPhone.
Apple is working to release a new iPad Pro model in the first half of 2024, but considering the production concerns, we might see another delay soon, and the launch could stretch to WWDC 2024 or later. However, certain factors highlight that the iPad Pro with OLED display could launch sooner than expected, as Apple's latest iPadOS 17.5 beta houses references to the unreleased device and the technology it will bring to the table.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models will launch with a handful of improvements in terms of design, and as per the latest leak, Apple is tweaking the internal design as well to fit a bigger battery. While all iPhone 16 models are expected to house bigger batteries, the iPhone 16 Plus battery capacity will be slightly smaller than the current iPhone 15 Plus model.
