Newly-released gameplay videos are offering a look at how special stipulations like Casket Matches and Special Guest Referee contests will play out in WWE 2K24. The latest installment in the annual WWE 2K series is now only a few weeks away, and the creators of WWE 2K24 have been busy showing off the game’s many playable characters and game modes.
This includes some returning playable match types that haven’t been included in a WWE game for quite some time. WWE 2K24 is bringing back the infamous Casket Match, which requires one combatant to lock their opponent inside of a coffin to win. Ambulance Matches are similar, ending with one wrestler being stuffed into the back of an emergency vehicle after a no-holds-barred brawl. Lastly, WWE 2K24 will see the return of Special Guest Referee matches, in which another wrestler takes the role of an in-ring official and enforces the rules however they see fit.
Some content creators have gotten to play WWE 2K24 ahead of its March 8 launch date, and are sharing footage of some of the game’s highly-anticipated match types in action. This includes YouTube user Revelleution, who recently posted videos of WWE 2K24’s previously announced Casket and Special Guest Referee matches. First comes a Casket Match between Isla Dawn and Tiffany Stratton, which starts with a special animation of the titular casket being wheeled to the ring and a reading of the contest’s rules. During the match, each wrestler attempts to trap their foe by knocking them into the open coffin and closing the lid with a button-pressing minigame.
Revelleution also posted a video of WWE 2K24’s Special Guest Referee match type, which sees Dakota Kai officiate a contest between Bayley and Iyo Sky – itself a preview for when these former Damage CTRL teammates face off against each other at this year’s WrestleMania. During this match, the player controls Dakota Kai as she counts pinfalls and ring-out counts, checks for submissions, and even disqualifies competitors who break the rules in front of her. The player can switch over to attacking the two participants instead with a button press, but they can find themselves thrown out of the match if they don’t properly perform their duties.
Special Guest Referee matches haven’t been available in a WWE game since WWE 2K14, and WWE 2K15 was the last time that fans could play a Casket Match. WWE 2K24is bringing back both popular match types, adding even more variety alongside its 40 Years of WrestleMania Showcase and enhanced MyGM and MyFaction modes. Gamers will be able to stuff their opponents inside a dreary casket or call a match from the sidelines when WWE 2K24 hits the ring next month.

A WWE 2K24 player recently recreated the legendary Sabu using the game’s character creation suite, but the superstar himself seems less than thrilled at the result. WWE 2K24 has partially censored Vince McMahon in its 40 Years of WrestleMania 2K Showcase Mode in the wake of the former chairman’s recent controversies. Earlier this year, ex-WWE employee Janel Grant filed a lawsuit accusing McMahon of sexually assaulting and trafficking her.
