Witchfire, the new grimdark (that’s an official description) shooter from The Vanishing of Ethan Carter developer The Astronauts, launches in early access today. Much like Ethan Carter, Witchfire uses photogrammetry to deliver a strikingly-detailed dark world, although this time around, walking-sim-style adventure gameplay has given way to intense first-person shooter action. You can check out a lengthy overview trailer for Witchfire, below.
Looking fairly intense and visually striking in much the same way Ethan Carter was. Need to know more about the game? Do check out Wccftech’s recent interview with the makers of Witchfire, in which we discuss the game’s protracted 7-year development process, the possibility of jumping to Unreal Engine 5, support for DLSS 3 and other upscalers, and more. Meanwhile, here’s an official description…
“Armed with forbidden pagan magic and infernal firearms as one of the Vatican’s elite preyers, players will experience a world that adapts to their progress. The longer a preyer brazenly clings to life, amassing more power and a greater arsenal, the Witch will sense this growing threat and send forth deadly cataclysms and more powerful minions. Greater success means greater challenges to conquer.
Preyers have the freedom to choose their methods of witch-hunting: a sharpshooter’s agile fingers, a tactician’s analytical mind, or the warlock’s eldritch might and magical relics. Select or combine these tactics to determine the most suitable path to victory. Furthermore, the preyer is not bound by time restrictions— you can rush into a huge mob of enemies, eliminate them one by one from afar, steer clear of a fight, or provoke more battles for bigger rewards. Only you decide which path to embark upon.”
Witchfire is available in early access on PC today via the Epic Games Store. The early access version of the game will set you back $40. In terms of content, The Astronauts say it’s “all over the place” with some aspects of the game being over 75 percent done and others being much less developed, but they promise “more than enough content to justify a release.” What do you think? Will you be jumping in early?
