When launched exclusively on Xbox and PC on September 6, 2023 — following a week of Early Access for special edition owners -many wondered if Bethesda's space ARPG would ever come to the PlayStation 5 as well. Following several rumors that Microsoft was planning to make some of its Xbox-exclusive titles multiplatform, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has addressed whether will be among them.
's Xbox exclusivity was announced at E3 2021 following Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, and this received some backlash from PlayStation players at the time as previous Bethesda titles such as or were multi-platform releases. Bethesda's Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications, Pete Hines, apologized for this, stating that he could relate to the feelings of frustration from the fan base as he also plays games on that console but that the developer had to focus on building games such as for Xbox moving forward.
During the February 15, 2024, Official Xbox Podcast, Phil Spencer confirmed that four Xbox and PC exclusives would be coming to PlayStation, but didn't elaborate further on what these would be, stating that the developers behind those titles had their own plans for announcements. The podcast's host, Tina Amini, directly asked Spencer if or MachineGames' upcoming would be among these titles, with both titles being named in the initial rumors surrounding the multiplatform plan.
Spencer confirmed that neither nor would be among the titles coming to PlayStation. The four titles were instead over a year old, with a couple of them being community-driven so Microsoft could continue to invest and build upon them. With being a single-player title and having been released less than six months ago, it wouldn't have fallen into these criteria anyway.
Microsoft's acquisitions of Zenimax and Activision Blizzard King were intended as a way for Xbox to secure content to remain viable in the business after the amount of PlayStation-exclusive releases on the market. In fact, during a hearing with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) (via ), it was revealed that a huge part of the reason Microsoft acquired Bethesda is due to Xbox's CEO Phil Spencer being concerned that Sony was going to make a PlayStation exclusive and skip Xbox. This would be in line with what it had done with other titles owned by ZeniMax such as and, which were both timed exclusives. With this being a driving factor in this business decision, it's understandable that Microsoft would want to retain its exclusivity over for now.
There is still the possibility that could come to PlayStation consoles at some point, especially if the launch of the four Xbox titles proves to be a success on the platform.

Microsoft will not release Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5 – yet. Xbox boss Phil Spencer stressed these two titles are not part of the four unnamed outings it’s officially bringing to Sony’s system, but in a follow-up interview with The Verge he seemed hesitant to rule out the possibility of them ever getting converted in the future.
More great games are coming to the PS5, and that’s never a bad thing. Microsoft announced during a highly massaged corporate message that it’ll bring four first-party titles to rival systems, although it wouldn’t name any names. Fortunately, the rumours have been so strong that we can surmise they’ll be rhythm brawler Hi-Fi Rush, historical adventure Pentiment, nautical outing Sea of Thieves, and survival game Grounded. These fit Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s description of two smaller titles and two live service experiences.

The last 10-days-or-so have been quite the roller coaster for Xbox fans. Team Green was thrown into turmoil earlier this month by rumors that everything from Starfield, to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, to even Gears of War may be going multiplatform. Granted, some of those rumors were later walked back, but still, the spectre of a third-party future for Xbox was raised.
If it weren’t enough that Microsoft detailed its plans for bringing first-party titles to other platforms (which doesn’t include Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle), it also discussed its next-gen hardware. Xbox president Sarah Bond promised the “largest technical leap” in a hardware generation.
Following today’s Official Xbox Podcast, Microsoft made its stance on first-party titles going multiplatform quite clear. While it will launch four titles on other platforms (rumored to be Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Pentiment and Grounded), there’s no change to Xbox’s philosophy regarding exclusives. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer clarified that Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle aren’t among those titles.
