Redfall, the first big exclusive game released by Bethesda since it was acquired by Microsoft, got a disappointing reception. Even Microsoft executives Phil Spencer (CEO of the Gaming section) and Matt Booty (Head of Xbox Game Studios) had to acknowledge it while vowing to support developer Arkane Austin in its endeavor to improve the game.
Speaking to GamesIndustry, Bethesda's Head of Publishing Pete Hines has now reiterated the intention, pointing out that Bethesda already has a track record of improving less than stellar launches, such as The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76. Moreover, he said there is even more incentive due to the long life enabled by Game Pass.
We are always in a process of learning, so that's not new for us. We don't like failing to meet our players' expectations. At the same time, we are the same company that has had launches that didn't go the way we wanted, and we don't quit or abandon stuff just because it didn't start right.
The Elder Scrolls Online's PC launch was not flawless, but we stuck with it. Now it's like this insanely popular multiplatform. It's the same with Fallout 76. Redfall is no different for us. Okay, we didn't get the start we wanted, but it's still a fun game… and we're going to keep working on it. We're going to do 60fps. We're going to get it to be a good game because we know, as a first-party studio, Game Pass lives forever. There will be people ten years from now who are going to join Game Pass, and Redfall will be there.
As of yet, Arkane Austin has only released Update 1.1. Granted, they could be working on a larger patch to be made available later this year. Hopefully, we'll soon hear more about how they want to overhaul their game; it is a matter of reputation, after all.
Luckily for Bethesda and Microsoft, Starfield had a very different reception and wasn't affected by the extra pressure of Redfall's disappointing release.
At long last, Payday 3’s full release day is today (September 21), and developer Starbreeze Studios has compiled a fascinating infographic of stats showing what players have been up to in the early access period.
Starfield has seen more than 10 million players since it came out on September 1 in paid early access form, Bethesda has announced. The impressive milestone means Starfield remains the biggest launch in Bethesda history after shooting past six million players on September 7.
One of the many leaked Microsoft FTC documents claim that Microsoft valued Larian’s smash hit RPG game Baldur’s Gate 3 at 98% less than EA’s Star Wars Jedi Survivor when it comes to its Game Pass service. No doubt they’ve probably rethought that number following Baldur’s Gate 3‘s mind-blowing success.
Ascendant Studios has laid off nearly half of its staff less than a month after the launch ofImmortals of Aveum due to poor sales.
Just a few weeks after the release of its debut game Immortals of Aveum, a fantasy FPS that replaces guns with magical spells (that feel mostly like guns), Ascendant Studios has laid off nearly half its staff.
Starfield officially launched last week, and while the reaction has generally been fairly positive, as with most Bethesda games, there’s still some missing features to be added and a lot of bugs to clean up. Today, Bethesda provided a bit of an update and what they’re working on – perhaps most excitingly, while the AMD-partner game only launched with FSR, it seems DLSS support is already in the works. That’s welcome news that hopefully means players will have the full suite of upscaling options before the end of year (modders have tried to step in to provide DLSS support, but the results aren’t always that stable). In addition to that, players can look forward to a proper FOV slider, HDR calibration options, ultrawide monitor support, and more. Here’s a brief rundown of what you can expect…
Starfield is getting official mod support in 2024, game director Todd Howard confirmed in an interview. Since the expansive space RPG's debut in early access, thousands of unofficial mods have been made available online, ranging from ones that enable Nvidia's DLSS upscaling system to making the inventory more compact and user-friendly. However, official modding tools make it easy to add fresh, custom content such as new planets and story quests, essentially opening the playing field for more experimentation. This has been the custom for Bethesda games at launch, where the modding community has been deeply involved with eliminating bugs or enhancing the experience, thanks to a deep understanding of the engine.
Bethesda has confirmed plans to introduce official mod support for Starfield in 2024.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive CRPG that can engross you for hundreds of hours. It’s chock full of adventure, romance, and creative shenanigans that take multiple playthroughs to experience fully. But what if you’ve got dinner in the microwave and only have a few minutes?
At the start of your adventure in Starfield, you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of possibilities the game offers right from the get-go. Getting off the beaten path, however, isn't easy, as you may end up fighting some powerful enemies that will make short work of you.
If you've been tempted to get into D&D—perhaps after enjoying Baldur's Gate 3?—but been intimidated by the price, now might be the time to jump in. With big sales on both the official D&D store and D&D Beyond, core books and sets are looking a lot more affordable, and it runs until 17 September.
Starfield's proper launch is not be until September 6, but one speedrunner with early access to the Bethesda space epic has already beaten it in less than three hours.
