Warner teases more Harry Potter games following Hogwarts Legacy’s success

Star Wars is perhaps one of the few franchises more popular than Harry Potter, and one fan has created a legendary mashup of the two, placing Harry Potter characters in some of the original trilogy's most iconic scenes.

The best-selling game of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, has sold over 24 million units to date. The news came from Variety, which also outlined the ambitious plan Warner Bros. Discovery has for growth in the gaming space. The company values Harry Potter (the IP behind Hogwarts Legacy), Mortal Kombat (which has sold three million units since its debut last September), DC, and Game of Thrones franchises $1 billion each for their gaming potential, and it plans to capitalize on them all.

It’s no secret that Hogwarts Legacy was a huge revenue earner for Warner Bros. last year after becoming the best-selling title in the United States and the UK. However, after it sold over 22 million copies in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently told Variety that it crossed 24 million sales.

After announcing that NetheRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 nearly reached three million units sold last November, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed to Variety that it’s now reached that figure. The sequel launched in September 2023 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Hogwarts Legacy players have been clamoring for new content for some time now, and this update offers hope that good stuff is on the way.

Hogwarts Legacy released to positive reviews and record-breaking sales last February, and many were predicting that it would be the top-selling game of the year well before it even hit store shelves.

When J.K. Rowling really doubled down on her transphobic and highly controversial stock of opinions in 2022, it didn’t bode well for the Wizarding World franchise which hadn’t tasted true success since the eighth Harry Potterfilm. But evidently, it completely failed to derail a particular offshoot of the franchise.

Hogwarts Legacy was the bestselling game in the U.S. in 2023, according to new data from Circana, the company formerly known as the NPD Group. Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software’s game set in the world of Harry Potter outsold this year’s Call of Duty, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, breaking that brand’s four-year streak as the No. 1 annual moneymaker in the U.S.

Hogwarts Legacy sold 22 million copies last year, approximately 2 million copies were sold during the December holiday season alone. It's clear to see that the game is incredibly popular, becoming one of the best-selling games last year, even striking up a close contest with serial best-sellers Call of Duty and EA Sports FC (formally the FIFA series).

Rocksteady Studios founders Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker have established a new development studio in London called Hundred Star Games, which is described as a AAA games studio startup that will consist of “only 100 industry veterans and emerging talents.”
