Tomb Raider's Darkest Game Is Getting A Remaster, Says Hidden Easter Egg

One of Lara Croft's darkest adventures is being teased in . Aspyr's recent remasters covered the first three games in the franchise, alongside their expansions, with the option to switch between new and classic graphics, and the original tank controls or a new «modern» control scheme. However, while the franchise has seen several reboots in recent years, there are still three games in this iteration of that have yet to be covered.

danthedan20 took to X to share an Easter Egg that could be teasing one of these titles in the remastered trilogy. The Easter Egg in question can be found on a transparent monitor with a radar signal highlighting several green dots next to a spiraling wave. The top left of the screen displays the number «02142024» in the left corner, which is a nod to the release date of the remastered trilogy, February 14, 2024. On the bottom right of the screen, however, is the word "" and the coordinates for Giza, Egypt, which is the setting for the fourth game, .

This Easter Egg is certainly a new addition to the remastered trilogy that wasn't in the original games, and therefore, many are speculating that it is teasing more remasters by Aspyr. was by far the darkest game in the series upon its initial release, featuring with Lara Croft's shocking death upon being trapped in a collapsing tomb in Egypt. This was reportedly due to the developers at Core Design looking to end the series after working on several titles non-stop for years.

This death ultimately didn't stick, with Core Design told to continue the series with, especially following the praise received for its improved visuals and enemy behavior. Therefore, saw Lara Croft's allies telling stories of her exploits following a memorial service before the game ultimately revealed that she had survived. The story then continued with, which was supposed to start a new trilogy on the next generation of consoles before the negative response to the title following a troubled development led to this being scrapped.

Fans are speculating that with a further three titles in this timeline, Aspyr could go beyond remastering and opt for yet another remastered trilogy. A new trilogy would be a better way to package more remasters, and considering the problems faced, this would certainly be an opportunity to fix these for a more polished experience. However, as the trilogy following was scrapped, and how as of the time of writing, seems to be the only game being teased there is also the possibility that Aspyr could release the fourth game in the form of a DLC expansion for , and ignore the following titles for a far bleaker end to the series.
