Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise, has been hit with a round of layoffs. This follows the ongoing crumbling of Embracer Group, which announced a large-scale restructuring of its assets in June, resulting in layoffs, closures and cancellations.
Back then, Crystal Dynamics stated that it would be insulated against such action, so this news does come as a surprise. Word began to trickle out as employees announced they had been laid off, and it appears that nine brand/marketing staff and one IT employee have been let go. Crystal Dynamics confirmed these reports on Twitter in a statement.
The next Tomb Raider title will reportedly be the most expansive and most expensive yet made (bankrolled by Amazon Games), which is likely small consolation to those now left in the lurch. If Crystal Dynamics is no longer sacred, we can't imagine any other developers under the Embracer umbrella would feel especially secure right now.

Khayl Adam is the second best video game journalist Australia has ever produced, and his ambitions of world domination have (thus far) been curbed by the twin siren songs of strategy games and CRPGs. He has always felt an affinity for the noble dachshund, the best kind of dog.
Oof, that's bad. Feel bad whenever that happens..
there won't be another tomb raider game. the IP is dead in the hands of embracer or amazon. this is the one of the biggest messes in the gaming industry at the moment. let's just forget tomb raider ever existed. it was a good run, but it is time for a spiritual successor and to move forward...
The fact that 9 of the 10 laid off were for brand marketing suggest they expect Amazon to do all the marketing for the game and maybe other publishers for future games as well. No actual developers were laid off so I don't expect any impact towards the game being made. But I can definitely see this Studio being shut down if the new Tomb Raider flops.
Its a shame Sony don't go in for them and Gearbox, surely they could get them dirt cheap.
I've send it before but Embracer have really shot up to the top of my most hated gaming corps lately. They f**ked up hard and its everyone else pays for their greed.
In my opinion, Tomb Raider has really struggled for an identity in recent years. The more recent versions of Lara simply have not captured the public imagination in the way that the original version did. And even then, part of her original success was due to the novelty of a female protagonist and (lets be honest about

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will live long in infamy as a terrible game, but as is often the case, it seems there was more to the story than simple mismanagement. An investigative report into the title's chaotic development from German outlet Game Two describes «an atmosphere of fear» at Daedalic Entertainment. It claims the studio enforced uncompensated overtime and attempted to pay staff below minimum wage, as well as creating a toxic workplace environment.
Beloved Mortal Kombat 1 developer Ed Boon is teasing some intriguing additions to the latest iteration of the now-venerable fighting franchise. Lies of P is a Souls-like in the tradition of FromSoftware's greats, but one which has carved out a place of its own with an impressive commercial showing (we thought it was great, too). This subgenre is infamous for the exacting nature of its difficulty, but things have actually been dialled back quite substantially in the game's most recent revision.

High on Life is getting its first major piece of paid DLC next week. It's called High on Knife, and you can get up close and personal with the experience from 3rd October. We got a predictably odd claymation trailer announcing the offering, and while you should still expect a somewhat silly experience, the developers wanted to make things a little bit spooky this time around.
