These games are commonly pitted against one another as two of the best open-world space RPGs, and the developers at Hello Games have been working tirelessly since launch in 2016 to improve .
It's not an understatement to say was one of the most anticipated games of all time; it is described as Bethesda's first original IP in more than 25 years. However, as more days passed after 's launch, it quickly became apparent the game would likely not be remembered as a legendary classic like, which preceded it in 2011. Now more than six months removed from the official release, one of its biggest competitors has delivered an update that leaves no reason to continue playing over .
Of all the new features to come in 's latest update, the most important is the addition of the Starship Fabricator. Players can now construct ships to traverse the galaxy with no cap on creative potential, with the freedom to adjust looks, interior components, and transfer parts from one ship to another. Unwanted ships can now also be disassembled at the Starship Outfitting station, with their parts and components going straight into the inventory available for use on other ships.
If there was a reason to continue playing before the Orbital Update in, it was the Ship Builder. This was the only feature that truly set apart from other games in the genre, but now that the cat is out of the bag, it has officially lost its one competitive advantage. As time moves on and more people discover shipbuilding is not exclusive to, this will undoubtedly grow 's already impressive community.
is a much more polished game than, largely due to the fact it's been out for so long and has received consistent updates that improve the stability and add new features. For a studio as large as Bethesda, it's potentially much more viable and cost-effective to move on to the next game that's guaranteed to sell millions of copies. However, with the knowledge that more content is coming sometime in 2024, there is a chance that the DLC could save and give it the life it needs to further compete in this space.
The most notable difference between and is the storytelling., as with other Bethesda games, provides a rich and immersing narrative with plenty of lore to discover throughout the game. There is a story to follow in, but it's entirely optional and far from the central focus of the game. 's story is designed more as a preamble to learn about the many systems and planets, providing a helping hand
