The Steam Awards 2023 shortlist has been revealed - here's what Steam players think are 2023's best games

It’s no secret Baldur’s Gate 3 took the gaming community by storm once released. Whether it was the intense turn-based battles or the immersive storylines and dialogue , Baldur’s Gate 3 took the victory as Game of the Year during the Steam Awards 2023.

A few hours ago, Valve closed the Steam Awards 2023 polls to announce the winners in each of the ten categories. Unsurprisingly, Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 brought home another Game of the Year award after the previous wins at the Golden Joystick and The Game Awards, beating finalists Resident Evil 4, EA Sports FC 24, Lethal Company (the runaway early access smash hit of the last couple of months), and Hogwarts Legacy.

The winners of The Steam Awards 2023 were announced yesterday, but a few of the victors have called the value of the fan vote into question.

The player-voted Steam Awards have reached their conclusion, and the results are about as weird as the nominees. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the weirdest game possible won in several categories, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Labor Of Love award and Starfield for "Most Innovative Gameplay".

Lethal Company has enjoyed enormous success since it launched just a couple of months ago. From smashing its player record not long after releasing to being the top-selling game on Steam (where it still sits), it’s been quite the journey for indie developer Zeekerss. Now, the title could walk away with one of gaming’s greatest honors.

The Game Awards have enjoyed consistent growth since the first showcase took place in December 2014, to the point where they have become an integral pillar for the community, especially in terms of new reveals and announcements by developers and publishers all around the world. This year’s showcase, like previous years’, was another one to exhibit continued growth for the event.

The nominees for the public-voted Steam Awards have been announced and they are, perhaps more than ever before, baffling to me. If I was being uncharitable, I'd say that's because the list is overrun by games with large multiplayer communities that can be encouraged to vote for them - but who would want to be uncharitable? Let's instead say that the list is certainly not boring, even if Starfield gets a nod for "most innovative gameplay".

The Game Awards 2023 has broken its own viewership record, clocking up around 118 million livestreams.

When an armour-clad Swen Vincke, boss of Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, accepted the award for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023, he had just 30 seconds before the dreaded “please wrap it up” message ushered him off stage.

Final Fantasy fans got a closer look at Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind in a new trailer released for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth at The Game Awards 2023. The trailer also served as the debut of FF7: Rebirth’s main theme ‘No Promises to Keep’ composed by famed Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu.
