One of the most frustrating and lethal Pals to deal with in can actually be handled very easily with the right approach. With 137 Pals currently in the game, there is a great deal of variety in how they behave, move, and attack, from being relatively peaceful to very aggressive. That's not even mentioning the powerful Alpha Pals and Tower Bosses in . That said, also enables the use of many strategies to take on even the most dangerous of Pals and survive.
Aggressive Pals can pose a notable threat when exploring the Palpagos Islands, rightfully justifying a level of caution when venturing into higher-level areas. Of course, between capturing strong Pals and taking advantage of the many crafting options available, there are plenty of ways to mitigate and overcome obstacles. However, the behavior of some Pals can create more unique problems, which in turn require specialized solutions based on careful observation of how the Pal works.
Tocotoco are walking weapons of mass destruction in , thanks to their tendency to charge at the player character and explode using their Implode Skill. Dealing with the toucan-like Pal can be incredibly stressful, especially given that a whole flock (called a Tocotoco Implode Unit) could wipe out someone’s base with ease. However, a Tocotoco’s self-destruct works on a fixed timer, and this timer can actually be reset by hitting or shooting the Pal in such a way that it staggers. If done repeatedly, this can delay an explosion long enough to defeat or capture the Pal in question.
Similarly disruptive attack effects, like shocking or freezing, can also disrupt the timer attached to a Tocotoco’s Implode.
Although minor damage will not necessarily stagger a Tocotoco immediately, most weapons will be able to affect the Pal after a few hits. However, with that being said, stronger or more specialized weapons like the Stun Baton are preferable in a high-level fight. Some Partner Skills can also prove to be very useful, such as a Mossanda’s Grenadier Panda. The explosions caused by this Pal’s grenades can stun many pals at once, making the enormous panda a good choice for dealing with a group of charging Tocotoco.
It's also possible to obtain Mossanda Lux's Grenade Launcher at level 24, the electric variant of Mossanda.
When attacked by Tocotocos, it is easy to assume that the only options are to defeat or capture them quickly or else simply escape the blast radius. However, by keeping this quirk of their explosion’s timer in mind, defeating them becomes much easier. Of course, if attacked by several at once, preventing them all from exploding can be difficult, but shooting them down at range will help mitigate these Pals’ strength in numbers. Tocotocos are just one of many
