The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Exploring the roguelike survival mode, No Return

Few works of historical fiction have been so imaginative in premise, yet so dull and lackluster in execution. Freud’s Last Session puts a powerhouse pair of actors, Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode, in the shoes of two renowned real-life figures, Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis, as they engage in theological debate. But the resultant conversation, based on the play of the same name by Mark St. Germain (who co-wrote the screenplay with director Matthew Brown), would be laughed out of a high school philosophy club. Despite the caliber of its performers — especially Hopkins, who’s in the most fascinating phase of his career with works like The Father and One Life — Brown’s film is an utter dud.

After several years in development, Naughty Dog recently confirmed that it has officially ended development on The Last of Us Online, and in the wake of the developer’s cancellation, a number of developers who worked on the project have taken to social media to talk about their experience with the game- and it all seems overwhelmingly positive.

In a new blog published to the game’s official site, Andy Tsen, co-founder of Ramen VR, fully officially discussed the prospects of Zenith: The Last City’s 2.0 version. The blog also acknowledges that alpha playtests will be enacted soon.

Alongside a new epilogue and other features added by the fifth major update for , the game has also introduced a new hardest difficulty, Honour Mode, which adds a level of challenge that significantly exceeds any preexisting way of playing the game. However, aside from just increasing in-game difficulty, Honour Mode also introduces an extremely limiting, automatically updating single save slot for the entire playthrough, meaning that player decisions, bad rolls, and other potential mishaps can't be walked back once they happen.

The Last of Us 2 Remastered's new roguelike mode is inspired by a "renaissance of roguelikes."

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is set to grace PlayStation 5 consoles next month, and fans can also look forward to experiencing three ‘lost levels’ — playable sequences cut from the original game. Speaking about these levels, director Matthew Gallant teased that they’ll help give “a full idea of what could have been.”

The Last of Us Part II Remastered arrives for the PlayStation 5 console on January 19, 2024. With it comes a slew of new behind-the-scenes content, technical enhancements to leverage the PS5 hardware, and new modes to ensure that whether you’re experiencing the award-winning sequel’s story for the first or fifth time, there’s something new to discover.

The brand-new No Return mode will come with six bosses to unlock when it arrives on PS5 next month. The bosses and other mode unlocks are part of the first large information drop on the single-player roguelike survival mode, which is one of many new additions to the Remastered version of the game.
