The first trailer for Amazon Prime's Fallout show is here, and it's looking pretty gnarly. Well, more than gnarly - more like grotesque, as the series reimagines some of the series' most iconic monsters in live action.
Whether it's irradiated bears that can tear through power armour or giant geckos with... fingers (?) in their mouths, Amazon's take on the wasteland is brilliantly nasty so far. It's not clear what the main conflict will be, something many fans are eager to find out, but the trailer gives us a good idea of the atmosphere the studio is going for if nothing else.
The trailer also gives us our best look at the main cast so far. The central character, Lucy (played by Ella Purnell), is seen leaving her vault to travel the wasteland. Like any vault dweller, she's pretty horrified by what she comes across, and it's easy to see why. Even when you're not running away from hellish monsters, the locals aren't much better. There's plenty of violence between humans and ghouls on display, as surviving the wasteland seems to bring out the absolute worst in everyone. Because, you know, war never changes, etc etc.
While there are more than a few references for fans of the games here, the show also seems to be doing its own thing in some areas. For example, we see a one-eyed vault dweller - and not in the sense that he's lost one eye. No, he has one eye in the centre of his head, like a cyclops. We haven't seen radiation affect humans in this way in the games, so that might be an area the show explores.
The dog in the trailer has a name - and it's not Dogmeat! As revealed earlier today, the dog is called CX404. Yes, really.
There are also a couple of shots of the US pre-war, or at least a few seconds before the war started. Here, we can see the bombs going off, dooming the world to an irradiated hellhole forevermore. One shot features Walton Goggins' character, simply called The Ghoul, before he became a ghoul - so he is presumably one of the oldest characters in the show. Even in the games, pre-war ghouls are a rarity, since their long life spans aren't enough to protect them from the everyday violence of the world.
Ghouls aren't the only group to make an appearance in the trailer. We also get a look at the Brotherhood of Steel, and one of the named characters from the faction, Maximus, played by Aaron Moten. In his character description provided by Amazon, it's said that the Brotherhood wants to bring "law and order" to the Wasteland, so more like their Bethesda counterparts, as opposed to how they're depicted in other Fallout games.
We'll almost definitely get more trailers that give us a better idea of what's going on here. But in any case, Fallout is set to premiere on April 12, 2024, exclusive to
