After three years in development, Tomas Salas’ city-builder Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles is available now on consoles and PC. It’s well worth checking out in no small part due to its aesthetic and exploration aspects, but there’s more to come. Salas has provided a roadmap for the title, with the first update, “Trade, Tribute and Spoils”, coming towards the end of April.

Solo developer Tomas Sala has announced that The Falconeer and Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles will be followed by a trilogy-ending game – Project: Ancient Waves.
The announcement comes on the eve of the launch of the second part of this trilogy. Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles is out later today, a city builder twist on the setting established in 2020’s aerial dogfighter The Falconeer. Keep your eyes peeled for our review.
Broken into three parts, the whole trilogy has a tagline ‘From hostile skies and birth by stone to new depths’ hinting that Ancient Waves might see us head below the surface of the Great Ursee’s watery surface. Well…. head below without crashing your bird into it, or through exploring the physics defying regions where water has been peeled back, anyway.
Speaking to PCGamesN, Sala said, “I like the idea of the smallest roles and actors in a grand set of events, the next game will be an attempt to take the perspective on this world down to a human scale.” This will highlight “the people who do the jobs that run a society and their stories. At the moment, the topic I’m most interested in is how small acts of resistance can alter larger events. The world of the Ursee likely wasn’t a giant ocean, there are stories there involving some of the machinery and sci-fi elements of the Falconeer and Bulwark, and the shaping of this bleak place.
“I think it would be great to show the three epochs of this world, how a society gets stuck and fixed in place and attempts to break free through violence and conflict (The Falconeer). How people rebuild and the kind of walls they build around them (Bulwark) and then the perspective on how a society can collapse as seen by the people experiencing the preludes to such an event.”
It will be fascinating to see the direction that Sala takes with Ancient Waves. The Falconeer was a cult hit around the launch of the Xbox Series X|S – it arrived on PS4 and PS5 a year later – with a distinctive style to its visuals and aerial combat. Bulwark has then leapt off in a completely different gameplay direction, with Sala really embracing the community with initiatives like releasing a ‘live demo’ that evolved as he developed the game further. He could follow a similar path with Ancient Waves, so keep your eyes peeled for news and updates from Sala.
