Rich Lambert, the creative director of The Elder Scrolls Online, has revealed the reason why a classic version of the game has never been released. As the game approaches its 10th anniversary, The Elder Scrolls Online retains an enormous community of millions of players, keeping the game extremely relevant in the MMO space.
The idea of MMOs creating classic versions, giving players the chance to revisit the games as they were years ago, is not new. Old School RuneScape launched back in 2013, allowing players to experience Jagex's RPG as it was back in 2007. With frequent updates voted on by the community in the years since, Old School RuneScape still does many things better than most modern MMOs. For plenty of long-time fans, it remains the better of the two active RuneScape MMOs. World of Warcraft Classic followed in 2019, recreating Blizzard's MMO using a build from around September 2006. However, it seems that The Elder Scrolls Online won't be following suit any time soon.
Speaking to The Gamer, Rich Lambert, The Elder Scrolls Online's creative director, confirmed the valid reason why the game won't be receiving a classic version like some of the best MMOs on the market. «Nobody liked ESO when it launched, so I don't think going back to thatis ideal, but I understand the sentiment, being able to start over and being fresh and new,» he began, before going on to say, «It's something we've definitely toyed with and talked about, but we've spent so much time and effort turning ESO into what it is today that I don't think it's the right thing to do.»
It's a simple reason, but a valid one nonetheless — people just didn't like The Elder Scrolls Online enough at launch to feel nostalgic about it today. The game came out just a few years after Skyrim, and many were disappointed when the game was much different to Bethesda's single-player RPG. ZeniMax Online Studios has worked for a decade to bring the game to where it is now, with many feeling that The Elder Scrolls Online's version of Tamriel is without equal. Perhaps, at some point in the future, a classic version of The Elder Scrolls Online will exist to revisit the current version of the game, but it doesn't sound like it's in the plans at the moment.
Nobody liked ESO when it launched, so I don't think going back to thatis ideal, but I understand the sentiment, being able to start over and being fresh and new.
The upcoming Gold Road chapter in The Elder Scrolls Online looks like it will mark a major milestone in the game's history. The new scribing system could revolutionize character builds going forward, providing a ton of longevity to the game as it looks to its next 10 years. In the eternally competitive landscape of MMOs, it's impressive to see a

A talented Skyrim speedrunner has broken a three-year-old world record, by going from the start of the game to defeating the Ebony Warrior in under 12 minutes. The Skyrimspeedrunning scene remains alive and well, and this particular category is among the most unique it has to offer.
A fan of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim managed to unlock the game's Platinum trophy on PS5 by killing Nazeem. Unlocking all the achievements and trophies in Bethesda's massive RPG Skyrim is no easy task. It will require significant dedication from anyone that dares to do it, with players having to complete all the major quests and complete a huge variety of additional objectives to get 100% completion.
With the Fallout live-action show now out and honestly far better than I was expecting, are Bethesda also brewing an adaptation of their other big RPG series, The Elder Scrolls? Not at present, according to Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard, and he says he'd "probably say no" if approached. Mind you, that was the stance he had until Fallout finally fell into place.

Bethesda director Todd Howard explained his vision for an Elder Scrolls adaptation during the red-carpet premiere of the Fallout TV series. Longtime fans of The Elder Scrolls have advocated for a live-action adaptation of the high fantasy action RPG series for years, but while many studios have expressed their interest in the chance to bring the land of Tamriel to film or television, the franchise has yet to branch out to either medium to this day.
Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard has addressed the chances of a TV show based on The Elder Scrolls following the success of Amazon‘s Fallout TV series.
Despite Amazon's Fallout adaptation getting a very positive reception so far, it doesn't seem likely that other Bethesda properties will be getting the same treatment. At least, not on Todd Howard's watch.
With the Fallout TV show on Amazon Prime Video getting rave reviews, the question on everyone's mind is whether Bethesda will try to replicate that magic with the Elder Scrolls franchise.
With the Fallout series currently taking the world by storm, many Bethesda fans are wondering if the Amazon Prime Video exclusive could open the door for other adaptations. At the premiere of the new show in Los Angeles, IGN took the time to chat with Todd Howard about the likelihood of this happening, and things aren’t looking good. Sorry, Elder Scrolls fans.
