For close to 20 years, PCMag has annually crunched scads of internet speed test data to rank the Fastest ISPs in the US. But this year, we're doing something different.
Rather than focusing exclusively on speed, we've expanded our ranking methodology and data sources to include a broader range of qualitative measurements, including the ISPs' coverage area, prices, and customer satisfaction ratings. By combining all these data points, we're able to objectively pinpoint the Best ISPs in the US—not just the fastest ones. It's a much more holistic way to look at broadband service in the US.
Better yet, in order to make this report more helpful to consumers, we've broken down the winners into three separate categories: the Best Major ISPs, the Best All-Around ISPs, and the Best ISPs by Region of the US. For each of these categories, we clearly lay out the best providers and provide helpful context to tell the parts of the story that numbers alone cannot.
Beyond that, you can also dig into the details of our new ranking methodology, and if you'd like to help us make this report stronger in the future, you can (and should!) take the PCMag Speed Test and contribute some data.
Now, let's dive in to see what happens when we factor in more than speed.
These are the Best ISPs using cable, fiber, and satellite in the United States
Striking a balance across the four criteria we choose to rate ISPs is almost impossible. When an ISP earns a score of 10 for one category, it rarely earns 10 for another. The scores tend to be more balanced for providers with lower numbers across all four criteria, as you can see below.
When it comes to major ISPs in the US (which we include only when we receive results for over 1,000 tests on our PCMag Speed Test), you can see this clearly with cable companies such as Spectrum and Comcast's Xfinity. That balance helps Spectrum take third place; good enough for us to name it one of the Best ISPs of 2023.
But the outliers can dominate too. In particular, SpaceX's Starlink, which lands at the top of the list, gets an edge over the competition with a coverage rating that can't be beat. Satellite-based ISPs such as Starlink, Hughesnet, and Viasat all earn a score of 10 for their nationwide coverage, which our data partner, BroadbandNow, pegs at 99+% for each of them. Starlink also earns a stellar score for overall satisfaction in our Readers' Choice survey on ISPs from earlier this year, so it starts from a point of strength. Keep scrolling and you'll see that this pays off for Starlink in different regions of the US as well.
That said, while many people (including some PCMag staff) have a special place in their hearts for Starlink, it's clearly more expensive than most other providers,
