Netflix’s TV adaptation of the novel The Three-Body Problem makes some important changes to its source material. Characters in Cixin Liu’s original book are reimagined and split into others. Threads from later books in Liu’s trilogy, known as Remembrance of Earth’s Past, are brought forward into the narrative. And thankfully, the virtual reality video game that’s played in 3 Body Problem is noticeably different to how it’s described in the book version.

Sony announced a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic three years ago during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase. Since then, the trailer was delisted, it was indefinitely delayed, and it changed developers. Fears of it being cancelled have been mounting as both Disney and Embracer remain quiet, but developer Saber Interactive insists that it's still in the works and only yesterday revealed that the project is "alive and well".

What followed was persistent radio silence from all parties involved, and though there were some claims that the remake had been cancelled entirely, it was reported last November that Saber was still working on it.

The early days of 3 Body Problem’s mystery are centered where so many of us find ourselves these days: a video game. This one is, as Jack (John Bradley) describes to Jin (Jess Hong) in the show, light-years ahead of what we know: a VR world where you can really taste, smell, and feel the world (and its many threats). As Hong describes it, those 3 Body game scenes felt “epic” to shoot, thanks to the production design of the world.

Adaptations aren’t easy, and few people in Hollywood know that better than David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The writing and showrunning duo ran the gamut on HBO’s Game of Thrones, starting off with five seasons of a better and more faithful translation to the screen than anyone could have imagined, before the series slowly went off the rails when they ran out of material. The pair’s new show, 3 Body Problem, proves that they learned a lot from their failures on Game of Thrones — but its struggles also prove that no two adaptations are alike.

The shiny new adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, from the guys who did Game of Thrones, may be the biggest show on Netflix right now, but it’s not the only adaptation that’s worth watching. Sure, there’s also the longer, more thorough and faithful Chinese version of the series, but that’s not the one we mean, either. Nope, instead, the best adaptation of this story comes straight from the animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers.

Adapting Cixin Liu’s scientifically dense novel The Three-Body Problem is no easy feat. The book is filled with page after page of detailed descriptions of scientific processes, from the impact three suns would have on a single planet to how a proton-sized supercomputer could interfere with the results of every particle accelerator on Earth simultaneously.

There’s a lot of complicated science going on in Netflix’s new series 3 Body Problem. Aside from the math puzzle that the series is named after, there are things like solar radio amplification, near light-speed travel, nano fibers, particle accelerators, and theoretical physics, just to name a few. But among the most complicated and confusing of all these elements are the Sophons, the little San-Ti assistants that prove to be massive nuisances to humanity throughout the first season.
