The most expensive cards of all time have now seen sales that set new benchmarks for how much money collectors would be willing to invest. The has always been a lucrative arm of the franchise, with some extremely rare cards out there fetching unbelievable prices. 2021 saw a renewed surge of interest in the game and its cards, which resulted in some cards' value skyrocketing to well above thousands of dollars. These were once worth almost nothing, but have been traded and auctioned off for unbelievable sums of money. In fact, many are among the highest-selling prices for cards of any kind. Although some of the wildest market fluctuations have cooled down a bit, a couple of cards have joined the lineup of the highest sales in 2022 and 2023.

The Tropical Wind promo cards given out as prizes for the 1999 Tropical Mega Battle are some of the rarest in the world, with only 12 copies made. The scarcity of the card along with its unique promo status, only obtainable by the best players of 1999, has a direct impact on its value. The highest selling value for a PSA — Gem Mint 10 Tropical Wind card is registered at a whopping $65,100, as seen on the official website. The sale happened in 2020, but the card has an estimated value of $161,822 on PSA’s auction page for Tropical Wind.

This rare card has an interesting story behind it. In 1998, Shogakukan’s magazines hosted a contest which, once passed, led the students to a conference in Osaka for a special tournament. The few winners of the contest were awarded this card. With a PSA – Gem Mint 10 grading, this card went up for auction in early 2021 and sold for a whopping $66,100. Magikarp may not be the cutest fish Pokémon, but it certainly fetched a lot of money, according to the official log.
