Nightdive Studios has confirmed the console release date for System Shock Remake, with the game heading to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on May 21st. The game was release for PC in May last year, so console players have been waiting almost a year to get their hands on it.
This System Shock remake was partially funded by a Kickstarter that ran in the middle of 2016, at the time with an estimated release of December 2017. However, development has gone back and forth, starting with a game engine swap from Unity to Unreal Engine in 2017, before development was put on hold in 2018 and restarted with a new team. The first tangible progress was seen with the release of an alpha demo in 2020, followed by an updated demo in 2021. At that point it was expected to release in 2021, but that then slid back to 2022 (alongside a new publishing partnership with Prime Matter), and eventually 2023.
In our review, Steve wrote, “Behind the glammed up modernised graphics, this is still System Shock to its core, and there were good reasons why the sequel basically rendered it obsolete. The end result is a game that still ranks as a classic, but you must accept it on its own terms. If you want to explore the history of the horror genre then this is the version to play, but you might want to bookmark a guide to avoid System Shock’s most outdated elements.”
