After endless speculation, Nintendo finally said something concrete about their plans for a Switch successor as part of their most recent earnings report, promising to announce the Switch 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) sometime during this fiscal year, which extends until the end of March, 2025. There are rumors that the Switch 2 will be unveiled this Fall and release in March of 2025, but nothing has been confirmed by Nintendo themselves.
That said, during an earnings Q&A Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa did provide a few more tidbits about their Switch successor plans (thanks to GamesIndustry.biz for the translations here). Per Furukawa, their current sales forecasts do not include the “Nintendo Switch successor device.” Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean the Switch 2 is not coming out this fiscal year, but it does mean Nintendo is unable or unwilling to commit to releasing before the end of March 2025 at this time. All they’re promising for now is that they plan to sell another 13.5 million Switch units in FY2025, a fairly lofty goal considering the age of the device. Selling another 13.5 million units would mean Nintendo would surpass the sales of the Nintendo DS (154 million sold) and possibly even the PlayStation 2 (155 million sold).
While Nintendo is being maddeningly evasive about the launch timing of the Switch 2, they did assure investors that supply issues related to shortages of chips or other components shouldn’t be a problem…
"As for supply of the Nintendo Switch successor console... at this point we are not seeing semiconductor supply issues like the ones that were happening until the year before last, and we do not anticipate that semiconductor supply will present a major problem for the launch of the console.”
While not exactly a shock, Furukawa also confirmed there will still be an emphasis on offering physical games for Switch 2, dispelling any speculation Nintendo might go digital-only.
What are your thoughts on all of this? Do you think we can expect the Switch 2 to arrive sometime during Nintendo’s current fiscal year? Or might we be left waiting even longer?

You might not know this if you grew up in the later eras of Nintendo, but the company ran an esports competition called the Nintendo World Championships way back in 1990. The event toured 29 American cities and players from across the country gathered to compete using a custom Nintendo Entertainment System Game Pak. The cartridge used in the event went on to become a prized collectors’ item, but now, players will get a chance to buy a physical item directly inspired by it.

Nintendo confirmed its forecast for consoles sold during the remainder of the fiscal year did not include Switch2 sales, suggesting its next console will launch later than fans had hoped. Since its ongoing development was leaked, fans have been desperately awaiting more news regarding the release date for the successor to the beloved Switch gaming console. Unfortunately, they might have to wait a little longer than previous rumors suggested.
Following the confirmation that the next iteration of the Nintendo Switchwill be unveiled before March 2025, recent leaks may have just revealed the hardware users can expect to find within the hybrid console. The current iteration of the ever-popular console is notorious for its less-than-desirable specs; even when it launched in 2017, it's power was significantly less than competitors like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While the so-called Switch 2 likely won't rival Sony and Microsoft's machines in terms of performance, it sounds like it will at least be a major step up for Nintendo.
