Two weeks ahead of the Super Bowl, Mattel revealed it would be releasing Barbies, Little People sets, and UNO cards themed after whoever won the Big Game. Not just that, but the toymakers showcased images of all products, for both teams, and opened pre-orders even though only the winning team's items would ever see the light of day. Now the Super Bowl is over, Mattel's Kansas City Chiefs collection will become a reality, and pre-orders for the San Francisco 49ers products have been canceled.
That's right, as if losing the Super Bowl isn't a bitter enough pill to swallow, 49ers fans the world over now have to come to terms with the fact their team's Barbie will never become a reality. Well, unless Mattel makes this an annual thing and the 49ers win the Super Bowl in the future. For now, only the Chiefs have their own Barbie, Little People set, and UNO cards, and pre-orders for all three items are still available.
The Kansas City Chiefs Barbie has brown hair, black face paint under her eyes, and a big red foam finger on one of her hands. Oh, and she's wearing a Chiefs jersey too, of course. You can pre-order the Chiefs' limited edition Barbie through the link in the box below for $30. Pre-orders will remain available until February 25, 2024, after which point it's unlikely the doll will ever be available again.
Mattel created two dolls to celebrate Super Bowl LVIII, one for the Kansas City Chiefs and another for the San Francisco 49ers. However, only the winning team's doll became a reality and was available to buy after the big game.
Pre-orders for the Chiefs' Little People set and celebratory UNO cards will also remain open until February 25. The Little People set also costs $30, and the UNO cards are just $12. Three Chiefs players have been turned into Little People, and a super fan completes the set of four. I'm assuming every player in the team is represented in the UNO deck, although that's not specified. What is specified is the inclusion of a special edition Touchdown card. Play a touchdown with these cards and the last player to raise their hands has to draw three cards.
Mattel isn't the only company celebrating the Chiefs' Super Bowl win via new toys. Funko has released a four-pack of Pops featuring the winning team's most notable players. Available for pre-order now but won't ship until the end of August 2024. The Barbies, Little People sets, and UNO decks also won't ship until August.

As the video games industry violently contracts to ensure shareholder satisfaction at the cost of making thousands upon thousands of people unemployed, Skylanders studio Toys For Bob have announced they're splitting from Activision Blizzard and Microsoft to go independent. Good for them, but maybe too late for some. Earlier this month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that it seemed Activision Blizzard were closing Toys For Bob's California headquarters and laying off 86 people. Still, the new independent Toys For Bob say they're working on something new and "exploring a possible partnership" with Microsoft.

When Backerkit’s crowdfunding platform formally launched in mid-2023, the company quickly made strides in the tabletop space, primarily by courting disaffected Kickstarter users. Now co-founder and CEO Maxwell Salzberg tells Polygon that his company already has twice the number of tabletop campaigns committed to the platform in 2024 as it did for all of last year — which isn’t bad for what he calls a “bootstrapped” company. The goal for 2024? Keep the crowdfunding ball rolling while also managing its expansive pledge-management services.

Sam Altman's goal of raising about $7 trillion to make artificial-intelligence chips tells a story beyond his borderline-insane ambitions. First, the infrastructure needed to build AI has become exorbitantly expensive. Second, most of that value is still — still! — held by a handful of large technology companies — and the oligopoly is only going to get worse.
