World of Goo 2 is set to debut as a Nintendo Switch console exclusive on May 23. Its release date and Switch console exclusivity have both been revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct, which also featured new gameplay footage from the sequel to one of the highest-rated Wii games ever made.
World of Goo is among the most commercially successful and renowned indie games of the fifth console generation. Developed by San Francisco-based 2D Boy, the physics-based puzzler was originally released for the Wii and PC in late 2008 before making its way to mobile devices two years later. It was also ported to the Switch in 2017, debuting as part of the hybrid console's launch lineup. World of Goo 2 was originally announced at The Game Awards 2023, mere weeks following its predecessor's 15-year anniversary.
Some two and a half months later, the game appeared at the first Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase of 2024. The February 21 broadcast treated it to a new gameplay trailer, which included the confirmation of the puzzler's release date: May 23. The 90-second video also revealed that World of Goo 2 will be a Switch console exclusive. That commitment to Nintendo will not prevent it from launching on every major PC OS in existence; a new update to the official World of Goo 2 website coinciding with its Nintendo Direct trailer confirmed that the game will receive a same-day release on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Windows and macOS users will be able to choose between getting World of Goo 2 from Epic Games Store or straight from 2D Boy. Meanwhile, Linux gamers will only get the latter option. While there's been no mention of a Steam release so far, it would appear that 2D Boy struck a fairly favorable EGS exclusive deal seeing how the studio will also be selling the game directly, so the PC version of World of Goo 2 won't actually be exclusive to Epic's storefront.
The title is definitely one to watch for fans of puzzlers, not least because the original game is still touted as one of the best examples of its genre ever made. That's also reflected in its review scores, with World of Goo being the fourth highest-rated Wii game ever made, as well as the highest-rated third party.
