Strategy RPGs are so freaking back: Unicorn Overlord publisher Atlus apologizes for stock shortages in Japan

Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord launched in a busy month, with Rise of the Ronin and Dragon’s Dogma 2 arriving nearly two weeks later. Nevertheless, it’s seen an impressive reception, selling out physical copies and topping Japanese sales charts for two weeks. Atlus has also released an accolades trailer, confirming over 500,000 units sold. Check it out below.

Promoting your troops in Unicorn Overlord is one of the most impactful things you can do in the mid-game. It’s so powerful that you should stop trying to make new units and focus on powering up your army the moment the feature is unlocked. This naturally leads to the question: “Who do I promote first?”. 

Unicorn Overlord is jam-packed with classes to discover. Every major location in the game is overflowing with new things to experiment with, and part of the fun is digging through it all to find the perfect class to fit into a specific role. What’s even more impressive, however, is how balanced early-game classes are to late-game classes.

Leading the Liberation is no easy task in Unicorn Overlord. You are but a handful of upstart rebels facing off against an Empire that has conquered the continent. Unicorn Overlord has a whopping 60 classes to play with. Not only that, but a whole bunch of them are unlocked during your initial liberation of Cornia. These range from powerful melee threats like Sellswords to immovable walls like Hoplites. Not to mention mighty magic-users like Shamans and Witches.

Unicorn Overlord can be overwhelming when you first start. Heck, it can be overwhelming throughout its runtime if you aren’t prepared to delve into its far-from-svelte bowels. But it’s not insurmountable and having a basic idea of what classes to bring in the early game can help smooth out our play experience.

Being a Vanillaware title, the recently released (and excellent) strategy RPG Unicorn Overlord bears immediate resemblance to the Japanese developer's previous outings, like Muramasa: Rebirth, Dragon's Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. This is because longtime artist and studio co-founder Shigatake insists on depicting food as hyper-realistically as possible and defying the laws of physics when it comes to depicting the female form.

With lovely strategy RPG Unicorn Overlord being a Vanillaware title, it obviously has a cute little minigame where you scarf down illegally delicious-looking food. It turns out the main artist behind these entreating entrees is also responsible for the way the game upholds another Vanillaware quirk: curiously jiggly women. 

Unrailed 2: Back on Track is a multiplayer local and online co-op game full of track-building mayhem, and it's out later this year in early access.

Unicorn Overlord enjoyed an impressive debut in Japan last week with over 74,000 units sold, and as per the latest weekly charts for software and hardware sales in Japan released by Famitsu, the game has held on to that top spot. The fantasy tactics RPG’s Switch version still sits in first place, having sold an additional 16,000 units, though its PS5 and PS4 versions have dropped out of the top 10.

Alain can wed a bride during the events of , but this will alter some portions of the game, including adjustments to the ending. It also has some gameplay benefits, as the chosen wife will perform even better in combat.
