EA has announced that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Jedi:Fallen Order’s creative director, Stig Asmussen, is leaving Respawn Entertainment.
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, EA gave this statement:
“After careful thought and consideration, Stig Asmussen has decided to leave Respawn to pursue other adventures, and we wish him the best of luck.
Veteran Respawn leaders will be stepping up to guide the team as they continue their work on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.”
Stig Asmussen got his start in the video game industry in 1999, as the 3D artist for arcade and home console classic, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. Prior to joining Respawn Entertainment, Stig was best known for his work on the God of War games, all done under Santa Monica Studio. He had spent eight years at Santa Monica Studio, and about nine years at Respawn, having been confirmed to have worked there since at least 2014.
There was no indication until now that Stig had been unhappy at Respawn, or that he was interested in moving on. In fact, we had reported on two separate instances where Stig said he expected to make a third game for the Star Wars Jedi franchise, with Cal Kestis in it. He made these statements in March, and then in April, heavily implying that his team at Respawn had already planned out how to end Cal Kestis’ story.
As for the Star Wars video game franchise, EA’s mismanagement and cancellation of multiple projects did lead Disney to open up the floodgates for multiple developers to get to make their own Star Wars video games.
However, those issues did not seem to affect Respawn. After the success of the two Star Wars Jedi games, we can look forward to two more projects under their hands.
One is an untitled Star Wars FPS. It should be noted that a Star Wars Battlefront 3 was pitched by DICE, but rejected by Disney. Tom Henderson tweeted in 2021 that the rejection was because “it takes 20% more sales to make the same money.”
This unnamed FPS will presumably be highly differentiated from DICE’s Battlefront, but heading the Respawn project is Peter Hirschmann. Peter was at Pandemic Studios many years before, and worked on the two Battlefront games that Pandemic Studios made.
The other project is an untitled Star Wars strategy game, being developed by Bit Reactor. Bit Reactor is composed of many former Firaxis staff, and so their project is expected to be an XCOM-like strategy title. Respawn is also involved in this project to some degree.
Whatever the reasons for Stig’s departure, we wish him well in his future projects and hope to see him in the games industry in the future.
Cameron Monaghan, the actor behind Cal Kestis, the protagonist of both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, has confirmed that a third game is currently in the works.
Actor Cameron Monaghan casually confirmed that a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is in development. During the Ocala Comic Con event, the voice and motion capture artist behind the protagonist Cal Kestis said, “We're working on the third. We're in the process of doing it right now.” The news comes as a surprise, considering the series director Stig Asmussen, who rebuilt and instilled faith in single-player Star Wars games, recently left EA/ Respawn Entertainment. However, he always expressed interest in furthering and concluding Cal's arc through a trilogy, with discussions of a sequel dating back even before 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was out.
Given how big 2023 has been for gaming on numerous levels, it can be easy to forget that certain titles have been out for several months and were really incredible when they arrived. One such title was Star Wars Jedi Survivor. The sequel to Respawn Entertainment’s epic first entry into the galaxy far, far away, was highly anticipated by fans, and many were curious how the development team would handle the continued journey of Kal Kestis. Thankfully, outside of some optimization issues, the game was great, and many consider it one of the many contenders for Game of the Year. But now the question is, what’s next?
A third Star Wars Jedi game is in the works, according to actor Cameron Monaghan, with the newly-announced sci-fi sequel expected to follow on from 2019's Fallen Order and 2023's Survivor.
A sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is in development, at least according to the game’s star, Cameron Monaghan, who plays Cal Kestis. That’s probably not a surprise to Star Wars fans, especially given publisher Electronic Arts recently praising Jedi: Survivor for its “critical acclaim and commercial success” back in August.
A third game in the Star Wars Jedi series is in the works, the actor behind its protagonist has confirmed.
During a recent panel at Ocala Comic Con in Florida, Cameron Monaghan, who plays Cal Kestis in the Star Wars: Jedi videogames, confirmed that a third one is in the works. At the end of the panel, near the 43-minute mark in a fan-recorded video, Monaghan said, «We're working on the third, we're in the process of doing that right now. So that's a big undertaking and it's been some conversations so far, but hopefully when all things are said and done we'll be able to go in and make something really cool for you guys again.»
Given the widespread critical and commercial success that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have enjoyed, it seems safe to assume that there will be a third game in the series, and though one hasn’t been officially announced yet, actor Cameron Monaghan, who plays Star Wars Jedi protagonist Cal Kestis, has let slip that work on the series’ next instalment is underway.
