offers many opportunities to choose sides in a conflict, and befriending Mathis Castillo is one of those choices. He's a greenhorn pirate looking to join the Crimson Fleet, which rules over large swathes of space with an iron fist. The player character may join the Crimson Fleet for any number of reasons, either on their own or as part of an infiltration mission for 's United Colonies faction, and will be paired up with Mathis on an important mission.
During the quest «Echoes of the Past,» Crimson Fleet leader Delgado sends the player character to secure an abandoned prison called The Lock, located on the surface of Suvorov. He's under the impression that Jasper Kryx, the founder of the Crimson Fleet, may have left a clue as to where he stashed his hoard of treasure while he was imprisoned there. The pursuit of that treasure, Kryx's Legacy, makes up the majority of the Crimson Fleet's quest line, but that's not the only reason Delgado sends the player character there. It's also a test for the wannabe pirate Mathis, and Mathis has plans of his own.
During «Echoes of the Past,» Mathis repeatedly asks the player character if they'll help him commit mutiny against Delgado and take over the Crimson Fleet — as risky as it sounds, it doesn't really matter whether they say yes or no. If they deny him, Mathis will be a little hurt, but it's possible to regain his trust later. If they agree, he'll eventually admit he doesn't have the stomach for such a thing and can go on to become an obedient member of the Crimson Fleet.
In the end, there's no reason to turn him down since siding with him doesn't lock them into betraying Delgado and can even unlock some major benefits down the line. He's not exactly a decent person, but he is capable and, to some extent, earnest. Going against Mathis only serves to upset him, and while refusing to go along with his plan doesn't permanently turn him against the player character, continuing to side against him can invoke his wrath.
There's one further opportunity to side with Mathis directly in, which comes toward the end of the «Echoes of the Past» mission. The protagonist gets an opportunity to report on Mathis' performance during the quest when Delgado contacts the duo in the prison security room. If they say he's done well, Delgado will give him the go-ahead to join the fleet. Mathis is immensely grateful and promises to have their back someday. He'll remain their buddy for the remainder of the Crimson Fleet quest line and will come to their aid in its final mission.
It's important that the decision to back Mathis occurs while in the abandoned prison in «Echoes of the Past» to recruit him later, as there is no real way to revert or walk things back after this scene occurs.
