Due to the sheer scale of , there are plenty of activities to partake in, from helping the Freestar Rangers stop bank robberies to participating in blood sports. In the case of the latter, this can be carried out in a particularly notorious and shady gambling den, The Red Mile, on the planet Porrima III. The Red Mile is not the kind of location players tend to just stumble across, with its location in the Porrima system found slightly west of Volii. However, for those who seek it out, there is the option to participate in running its main attraction of the same name.
Due to its lethal nature, The Red Mile race is rather controversial, with some companions, such as Sarah Morgan, speaking out for their dislike of the sport, while others, like Andreja, actively encourage participation. Regardless, they will set aside their opinion and join the player, and it will not impact how well they favor the player afterward, which is fortunate for those looking to romance one of these companions but also yield the death-run's rewards.

Players can sign themselves up to run The Red Mile by simply speaking with Mei Devine at the Red Mile bar. Once this is agreed upon, she will walk onto the nearby stage to announce that a new challenger is undertaking the sport so the other patrons and guests can begin placing their bets, and will then escort them to an elevator to enter the challenge. Once in the area, the Red Mile race has the single objective of reaching the beacon at the end of a crater lined with toxic gas vents and filled with predators known as the Red Mile Maulers, then returning to the safe zone near the elevator.

The easiest way to run the Red Mile quickly is to avoid engaging with most of the Maulers, as there is an abundance of them scattered on the way to the beacon, and they all have a large health bar that can take a while to drain. Consuming items that increase Oxygen regeneration and equipping a balanced boost pack to jump large areas also greatly assist in moving through the Red Mile quickly and avoiding the Maulers and toxic vents.
To beat The Red Mile's record, players must successfully run the course 30 or more times. While this sounds simple enough and can be done fairly efficiently once they get better accustomed to the map and its layout, it can still take some time to accomplish, as a full run will take at least a couple of minutes, considering that players need to run back to the safe zone.
