Star Trek Online's Ship Of The Line Museum Is A Fantastic Homage To The MMO's Roots

There's so much more to running a starship than simply making it so on the bridge. Like its namesake The Next Generation episode, Star Trek: Lower Decks shifts the focus away from the Picards, Siskos, and Janeways of this world to concentrate on the junior officers who are more traditionally background players – or even phaser fodder – in other branches of the Star Trek universe. 

Starfield fans are wasting no time bringing some of the sci-fi genre’s oldest and most beloved ships to Bethesda’s new space RPG. 

Sea of Stars is filled with items to find, some of which you may miss if you don’t do a little exploring or backtracking during your playthrough. One such instance involves the headmaster’s office found in Zenith Academy, and make the trip is well worth it for the item you find and some extra goodies you can tackle along the way.

One of the biggest draws of any Bethesda game is the factions, and Starfield is no different — with plenty of different factions to either pledge your allegiance to or wage war against.

Sea of Stars’ pixel RPG world is not complete until a sailing ship is unlocked, and that’s the Vespertine for you. Alas, the game won’t just hand this massive method of transportation for free. The Vespertine is currently under the hands of both Melee Mateys, Ranged Mateys, and a legendary pirate named the Stormcaller. Oh, and there’s puzzles. Loads of puzzles. This guide covers how to complete the Sea of Nightmare, solve all puzzles to unlock the Vespertine, and defeat the Stormcaller.

Solstice Shrines are a helpful side activity in Sea of Stars, offering puzzles for players to complete, and netting them some powerful gear and accessories in the process, all while working towards opening a mysterious door in Mountain Trail. However, these can be a bit difficult for players, and some may need a helping hand to claim the shrine’s treasures.

Star Trek Online ’s 30th season, Incursion , is on the way to continue last season’s Multiverse arc following the tearing of the Reality Vortex. The story also brings another original Star Trek actor into the game, and conflict with the Borg.

Role-playing games can often promise a grandiose adventure, and there’s certainly been no shortage of those this year. Some of the heaviest hitters of 2023 are lengthy RPG journeys that advertise dozens upon dozens of hours of questing and storytelling. So it’s nice when a game like Sea of Stars lets me hang up my adventurer’s hat for a little bit of fishing.

Many attempts have been made to recapture the JRPG's glory days. In Tokyo RPG Factory, Square Enix founded a whole studio dedicated to the craft, and more recently Squeenix's "HD-2D" style has come to define both their own retro work and that of others. But it's arguably the RPGs from outside Japan that have been doing a better job of propping up the SNES nostalgia tent. Last year's Jack Move and Chained Echoes were both infinitely more refreshing to me than the slightly tired Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler sequels, for example, and now we have The Messenger studio's latest, Sea Of Stars, which is probably one of the few Japanese-inspired RPGs I've played in the last decade that's even come close to bottling the mighty Chrono Trigger and lived to tell the tale. If you're the sort to cry, 'They just don't make 'em like they used to anymore', well, you can dry your tears, because Sea Of Stars is the one that is.
