Square Enix has given fans an update on the status of the third and final part of its Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.
The update arrives via interviews published in the newly released Final Fantasy 7 Remake Ultimania book, excerpts of which have been translated by Final Fantasy enthusiast Audrey.
In it, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura reportedly said the third game’s main story has already been completed, and that he thinks voice recording could start in the near future.
Nomura said Final Fantasy 7 remake series producer Yoshinori Kitase has raised the possibility of including something new and important in the game too, even though it didn’t feature in the original.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released for PS4 in April 2020. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, an upgraded version of the game that included a DLC expansion titled Episode Intermission, arrived for PS5 in June 2021. And Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released in February 2024.

With about a year spent working on Intergrade, Kitase said Square Enix managed to make Rebirth in about three years, partly thanks to employee retention.
By retaining much of the same team for the third game in the series too, he reportedly hopes to complete the final part of the trilogy in a similar timeframe.
That means Square Enix could be targeting a 2027 release for the game, when the original Final Fantasy 7 will be celebrating its 30th anniversary.
A Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth update released this week fixes a bug that was making it impossible for some players to earn a Platinum Trophy, among other features.

Square Enix has revised its approach to PC and console game development, and absorbed ¥22.1 billion (approx $140.9 million) in what it calls “content abandonment losses.”
Square-Enix has officially acknowledged a recently discovered bug revolving around Final Fantasy 16's New Game+ mode, resulting in a soft lock that does not allow players to progress. The launch of the newest main-series entry in the long-running RPG franchise last summer came with critical acclaim, lauded at the time as one of the best RPGs of 2023. Final Fantasy 16 received a nomination for «Best Role-Playing Game» at the 2023 Game Awards, and won the award for «Best Score and Music» during the show. Now, a new bug is plaguing fans' new playthroughs of the game.
Square Enix has prioritised fixing a Final Fantasy 16 bug that can prevent progress in New Game Plus mode.
By splitting up Final Fantasy 7’s story across a trilogy of full-fledged games with its ongoing remake trilogy, Square Enix has been able to flesh out its world and characters much more than it would have been able to do with a more conventional remake. Where the latter are concerned, that has also included entirely new characters who weren’t part of the story in the original game itself, coming in the form of secondary members of the cast who still end up having fairly important roles to play.
As the wait for the next expansion continues, Final Fantasy 14 confirmed that the Yo-Kai Watch collaboration event would return to the game for players to experience. The event will give Final Fantasy 14 players who missed out on previous Yo-Kai Watch events a chance to earn exclusive mounts, minions, and cosmetic weapons for their collections, alongside a new reward for this iteration.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second part of the remake trilogy of the original game from 1997, was released in February. While developer Square Enix has not confirmed a launch date or the official title for the final game in the remake trilogy, the game should likely be released on PS5 sometime during the ongoing console generation cycle. Now, the studio has provided an update about the launch timeline for the third and final game in the Final Fantasy remake trilogy project.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura has «completed» the story for the remake's final third instalment.
During its annual 14-hour broadcast, Final Fantasy 14 revealed some amazing game statistics collected over the last decade. From the combined length of cutscenes to the total weight of Materia Final Fantasy 14 players have melded, these stats show just how popular the critically-acclaimed MMORPG has become.
Ben Starr, the voice actor of Final Fantasy 16's Clive Rosfield, has joined fans in calling for a brand-new entry in the Final Fantasy Tactics spin-off subseries. The first Final Fantasy Tactics game was first released in 1997 for the PS1 as a tactical RPG spin-off to the mainline games. The original game got plenty of critical acclaim and would become one of the franchise's most well-regarded spin-offs, which eventually created a mini-franchise. While the series hasn't had a new title since the 2007 remake of the first game on PSP, there are still a number of fans who are hoping the series will make a comeback one day, with Ben Starr being one of them.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth enjoyed widespread critical acclaim upon its launch earlier in the year on a level that no game in the series has in a long, long time- though it seems that critical acclaim isn’t quite translating to commercial success in the manner that Square Enix would have hoped for.
It’s still difficult to wrap your head around how Square Enix managed to make a game as massive and diverse as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in the short amount of time that it did, and it looks like the company is hoping to do the same with the remake trilogy’s final instalment.
