Shinji Mikami appears ready to return to game development following the expiration of a non-compete clause.
“Now that I’ve broken the spell of non-competition on myself, I guess I should get to work,” he tweeted on Thursday.
It was confirmed in February that Mikami was leaving Tango Gameworks, the studio behind The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush, which he founded in 2010 before selling it to Bethesda.
Mikami is best known for his time at Capcom, where he directed the first Resident Evil, its 2002 GameCube remake and Resident Evil 4, among other titles.
He also directed Vanquish for PlatinumGames and produced Shadows of the Damned for Grasshopper Manufacture.
In 2020, Mikami stated that he wanted to direct one more video game project before he retires, adding that he had no shortage of ideas and they weren’t limited to the horror genre.
Last year Mikami reiterated this goal in a discussion with Resident Evil Village producer Jun Takeuchi, in which he said: “Something else I want to do is make my own game. To make another game. Right now we’re slowly preparing for that, and to make it work I get to give all the annoying jobs to someone else to handle.”
Mikami’s Twitter timeline shows he has been busy travelling during his time off, although he’s also made time for a few games.
Over the last six months he’s completed Ghost of Tsushima (“It was a lot of fun, the last part was great”), started playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and finished the Resident Evil 4 remake (“I enjoyed it very much”).
Grasshopper founder Goichi Suda recently said he’d like to make a new Shadows of the Damned game, ideally with Mikami’s involvement.
CD Projekt Red never thought about developing an expansion set after Cyberpunk 2077’s multiple endings.
If you'd asked me what I thought a Cyberpunk 2077 expansion would focus on after I first beat the game in December 2020, I would have guessed the heist on the Crystal Palace satellite casino teased in two of the base game's endings. According to CD Projekt Red narrative director Igor Sarzyński, though, the team was always firm on Cyberpunk's endings being the final word on V's story. Spoilers for 2077 and Phantom Liberty ahead.
Yes, we may be giddy about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder right now, but they're going to have their work cut out if either of them wants to be named Game of the Year. Tears of the Kingdom might still have that particular award wrapped up, and an amiibo restock at Walmart today may have reminded a few people of that after a very big video game weekend. Pre-orders for Zelda and Ganondorf's figures are available again for the first time in a while.
The buzz surrounding the new Spider-Man 2 game is palpable and electric. Since previews and demos have been released, there has been excitement around the game’s release. Spider-Man 2 has also received many high reviews as the days inch closer to its release on Friday, 20 October 2023, and the hype has proven more than ever that we need a Superman game like this.
In Tokyo, a man has been arrested for stalking a woman using social media sites like LINE (a popular app in Japan) and Twitter—as well as the MMORPG Final Fantasy 14. As reported by Kobe News (and translated by Siliconera), the man reportedly sent over 22 messages via those apps trying to re-establish contact, while also threatening to tell her family about their past conversations.
We now have a nice little update on the long reported Bioshock movie.
Square Enix is touring its highly anticipated RPG, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, to let the world sample what was demoed at Tokyo Game Show a few weeks ago. Its most recent stop brought it to New York City during New York Comic Con. Behind closed doors, Square Enix invited select media to give the upcoming action-RPG a spin. Our early impressions are incredibly promising, as Rebirth builds upon Final Fantasy VII Remake's excellent foundation by widening the game's scope and combat options. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is shaping up to be a monstrously large PlayStation 5 game, and one we can’t wait to play when it launches on February 29, 2024.
If you've been looking to stock up on the spooks and scares in anticipation of this year's impending Halloween, the Epic Games Store has your back; next week's freebie over there is The Evil Within, the acclaimed horror from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. And it's joined by the Eurogamer recommended Eternal Threads.
Shinji Mikami has signaled his intent to return to the video game industry.
The newest has been revealed through a trailer, teasing an AI-focused story for the latest installment.
Rocket League is one of the weirdest games that have become massively popular in the last few years. Who would've thought that combining arcade-style football with vehicular mayhem could be the recipe for success? It seems like Epic Games did. In the game, players can choose from a multitude of crafted vehicles such as high Octane, Dominus, and Marauder, while there are real-life vehicles to choose from as well, among the likes of Porsche 911 Turbo, Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R, Ferrari 296 GTB. There's even a Batmobile! Players can trade in-game items with their friends such as import cars, blueprints, post-game drops, Rocket Pass items, and more.
A year after unveiling the co-development studio Calypte, Virtuos Studios has shut it down.
