Following Sora's release earlier this month, the Nintendo Switch's amiibo run appears to have come to an end. Big games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario RPG not getting their own figures coupled with the imminent announcement of a Switch successor suggest there won't be any more amiibo releases on this console, and potentially no more ever if the next console doesn't have amiibo compatibility. Nintendo is giving collectors a chance to fill gaps in their collections though, the latest reprints pulled from Pokemon's amiibo selection.
Eight of the 12 Pokemon amiibo released have been restocked on the Nintendo store, all of them available to buy right now for $15.99 each. There doesn't appear to be any particular reason why these eight are available again and the other four aren't, although all of the Pokemon amiibo currently available are figures based on Pokemon featured in Super Smash Bros. All three of the Pokemon used by Pokemon Trainer among them, as well as Lucario, Incineroar, and others.
Missing from the restock is Jigglypuff, Smash's Pokemon Trainer, Pichu, and Detective Pikachu. No telling if that quartet will eventually be restocked too, but it seems unlikely since they weren't a part of this restock. Particularly Detective Pikachu. If the talking, coffee-powered version of the world's most famous Pokemon didn't get his amiibo restocked when Detective Pikachu Returns was released last year, it's unlikely it ever will.
Charizard's amiibo is one of three created off the back of Super Smash Bros' Pokemon Trainer. Tap the figure to your Joy-Con and unlock a trainable version of the character in-game.
The Pokemon amiibo restock continues what has been a run of amiibo returns in 2024. Joining Sora was a Noah and Mio two-pack, and since the three new amiibos hit store shelves, figures from the past have been returning too. A Shulk reprint accompanied Noah and Mio, and then other Fighter Pass amiibo such as Joker and Terry were re-released alongside Sora. If there have been any amiibo you've been trying to track down, now's the time to check if they're back in stock.
Mewtwo's amiibo captures the powerful Psychic-type Pokemon as it looks in Super Smash Bros. Not only decorative, the figure can also be used to unlock the character in-game.
Like almost everything beyond the end of the Switch's run when it comes to Nintendo, the future of amiibo remains a mystery. The next Nintendo console is now expected to launch during the first quarter of 2025, but with no official announcement, even that isn't certain. Whether it will have its own amiibo, how it will function, and even what it will be called remains unknown. For now, keep picking up amiibo while you still can.
