Sea of Thieves sails across impressive player milestone ahead of PS debut

Less than 24 hours after launching on Steam, the early access version of Hades 2 has already doubled the all-time peak concurrent player account set by the original Hades. While Supergiant Games certainly found success with its earlier titles like Bastion, Pyre, and Transistor, the studio really took off after it released the roguelike action title, Hades. Although Hades was originally an Epic Games store exclusive, it eventually launched on Steam a year later in 2019 through Early access, releasing Version 1.0 on September 17, before eventually launching across most other platforms like the Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.

Demand for Sea of Thieves on PS5 skyrocketed pretty much as soon as it became available to pre-order on the platform, and only went on to increase from then on, so it’s no surprise that the game’s sales are reflecting that in the aftermath of its PlayStation release.

Remember that bit in that Guy Ritchie film where Dexter Fletcher shoot a guy and then throws a glowing jar over his soldier that summons a bunch of skeletons to help him out? Me too! Must have been the direct influence for Sea Of Thieves' new Season 12, which launched earlier this week with a bang - from two smoking barrels! Among the additions in this season of the ever popular salty sea-dog open-world adventure are double barrel pistols. They deal less damage per shot but have higher rate of fire, and you can charge them up to fire both barrels at once.

Last month, GTA 6 publishers Take-Two Interactive announced plans to "rationalize" their "pipeline" by laying off five per cent of their workforce - around 580 people - and cancelling various games. As part of that, they're reportedly now doing away with 70 positions at their Seattle offices - Seattle being the home of the Take-Two-owned Intercept Games, the current developers of space sim Kerbal Space Program 2.

Take-Two appears to be preparing to close its Seattle office this summer, likely as part of the recently announced layoffs across the company.

Developer Rare has released the patch notes for Sea of Thieves' Season 12 update, which includes new weapons, treasure, a cannonball type, and more. The major update arrives alongside Sea of Thieves' full PS5 launch.

Rare’s live-service action-adventure title Sea of Thieves is available now for PS5 players. First available on Xbox One and PC in March 2018 before receiving an Xbox Series X/S update, it’s the first game from the developer to release on a PlayStation platform. Check out the launch trailer below.

A recently uploaded teaser for Season 12 of Sea of Thieves features some of the additional content that the upcoming major update will bring, including new weapons and items. The Unreal Engine 4-powered game, which is published by Microsoft and is part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, is set to become available on the PlayStation 5.

Rare has released a new update for Sea of Thieves, bringing a host of fixes to the game as well as making PlayStation 5 Early Access available for players who pre-ordered the Premium Edition. Sea of Thieves is set to fully launch on PlayStation 5 on April 30, but those who fulfill this criteria have access to the game after this latest update.

Sea of Thieves has surpassed 40 million lifetime players, Rare has revealed. This remarkable user milestone was achieved around the time Sea of Thieves concluded its immensely popular PlayStation 5 beta.
