For the first time since 2003, Apple faces a challenge from Samsung in the American Customer Satisfaction Index's computers category.
Apple has long gone unchallenged in the ACSI's survey but this time around, it ties with Samsung with a score of 83 out of 100. The survey covers people’s contentment with their desktops, laptops, and tablets, and "Samsung’s strong overall performance is boosted by surging customer satisfaction with its [Galaxy Tab] tablet offerings," ACSI says.
The rest of the leaderboard in this survey is a series of ties: Dell and HP share second place with scores of 81, followed by Acer, Amazon, Asus, Lenovo, and “All Others” with 78.
ACSI respondents like the devices' physical design the most (85 out of 100), followed by the availability of software and graphics and sound quality (84 each). Least appealing: computer vendors’ call centers (77).
PCMag readers might contest Samsung’s ranking: In our 2023 Readers' Choice survey of laptop and tablet brands, Samsung didn’t place in the laptops category (MSI topped that, followed by Apple) and came in second in tablets after Apple.
The September 2022 edition of the ACSI survey had Apple in first place with an 82 score, followed by Samsung with 81 and a five-way tie for third with Acer, Amazon, Asus, Dell, and Lenovo all at 79.
The new ACSI survey also covered TVs and household appliances. In the former category, LG’s score of 83 puts it just ahead of Hisense, Samsung, and TCL, which tie for second at 82. Sony places third with a score of 81. “All Others” and Vizio tie for fourth with scores of 80. (In our Readers’ Choice rankings of TVs and monitors from November, Sony was first, followed by an LG/Samsung tie and TCL in third.)
As for major appliances, Haier, LG, and Whirlpool share first place with scores of 82, followed by Samsung (81), Bosch (80), “All Others” (79), and Electrolux (78). The survey also reports the brand with the highest satisfaction in some types of appliances: Samsung for microwaves and ovens (85 each), Whirlpool for dryers (85) and dishwashers (83), and LG for washers (85) and refrigerators (where it tied with Haier and its GE and Hotpoint brands for 82).
The ACSI, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been conducting these surveys since 1994. This latest report drew on email interviews with 14,069 randomly selected customers whom researchers quizzed from July 2022 to June 2023.

After nearly a 20-year period of being the sole winner of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) in the category of Personal Computers (PCs), Apple has been forced to concede a tie by none other than its biggest smartphone rival - Samsung. For the unaware, ACSI measures customer satisfaction in three categories - personal computers, major household appliances, and televisions. It takes into account not just the device, but the experience that it offers, including the availability of apps/software, accessories, features, and even call center satisfaction.

The Apple Vision Pro is on track for an early 2024 release, but it should be no surprise that the company’s first mixed-reality headset is in the possession of CEO Tim Cook. While previous reports mentioned that the Chief Executive uses the device daily, in a recent interview, Cook recently stated that he watched an entire season of the American sports comedy-drama series Ted Lasso on it.
With the Apple Wonderlust event now in the rearview mirror, the hype around the iPhone 15 series seems to be at an all-time high. Apple unveiled its latest iPhones at its event on September 12, and its pricing strategy has left Apple fans pleasantly surprised. Rumours had predicted a price hike for both iPhone 15 Pro models but that isn't exactly the case as only the top-end iPhone 15 Pro Max got a hike, but with a bump up in storage as well. All other three models start at the same price as their predecessors.
