Melissa Barrera has reportedly been fired from the upcoming due to comments the actress made regarding the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
According to a report from One Take News (as well as World of Reel), Barrera has been “quietly let go” from her role in Scream VII, in which she was set to reprise her role as Sam Carpenter. While it’s unknown exactly what the exact cause of the firing is, both reports mention that it could have to do with comments Barrera made on Instagram.
Last month, the actress took to Instagram to share a story in support of Palestine amidst the ongoing conflict. In her story, Barrera said that Palestine would be free, and said she — a Mexican-born woman — also came from a colonized country. Since then, she’s continued to support Palestine on her social media.
As of now, it’s unclear exactly what the status of the next entry in the Scream franchise is. Alongside Barrera, the most recent two entries have starred Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding as the four main members of the new era of Scream.
However, Ortega’s role in the upcoming film also remains up in the air, due to her huge rise in popularity. After her breakout role in Netflix’s Wednesday, rumors began to circulate that Ortega wouldn’t be in the next Scream. Those were later countered by other reports that she would be. However, neither Paramount nor Ortega have commented on the film’s status.
