Bethesda and developer Arkane Austin have released a big update for Redfall, adding a 60fps Performance Mode on Xbox Series X|S and making a bunch of gameplay improvements and tweaks, as well as more accessibility options, as they try to deliver on their promises to make this into a much better game.
The headline change will be the performance mode for Xbox Series X|S, with 60fps having been expected in the run up to release, only to be dropped right at the last moment. The optimisation to hit that target on console has had a positive knock on effect on PC as well, with improved performance and stability promised.
That will certainly help how the game feels to play, but Arkane has also overhauled the aim assist and dead zones in the game to give better-feeling options across both controller and keyboard & mouse. There’s specific recommendations in the patch notes for how best to customise this.
Stealth takedowns are now a much better option, as you can take out Cultists & Bellwether enemies, while the world in general will be more challenging and engaging, with increased open world enemy populations and new encounters.
All of this is good for the game, but it’s possible it’s all far too little, too late. Redfall will always live under the spectre of a poor release, and the massive shift in gameplay style compared to Arkane’s best games for its co-op open world vampire hunting. The game recently snatched some headlines for only having single digit player counts on Steam’s activity tracker, though that obviously ignores players across Xbox and via Game Pass, where it will live in perpetuity. Updates like this should certainly help bump up the player count for a little while.
