The new, slimmer models of the PS5 are here, almost three years to the day that the original console first started to arrive on people's doorsteps. Providing someone didn't replace your order with a bag of cat food, of course. The two new models weren't the only PlayStation launches today, though. The long-rumored detachable disc drive appears to be available now too, its Best Buy listing popping up alongside the one for the slimmer PS5s/
Priced at $79.99, you'll find the store page by clicking the link below, but I can't guarantee there will be any left in stock. Do keep checking back if it is sold out though as not only might Best Buy have more, but if the disc drive pops up anywhere else, we will add links to the box below.
It's also possible the reason the disc drive is "sold out" is because it wasn't actually supposed to go up for sale yet. PlayStation simply said November when speaking about release dates and didn't specify when exactly in November that might be.
It's a little surprising that the disc drive has sold out so quickly since it's intended for people buying a new digital model of the console who change their minds about using digital media in the future. The disc drive is not compatible with the older digital PS5, just the brand-new one that launched today. That presumably means some people have been buying a digital-only slimmer PS5 and a disc drive, and together that costs $30 more than just buying the new slimmer model with a disc drive included.
PlayStation's detachable disc drive has been created with the slimmer model of the digital PS5 in mind. Compatible with just the digital version of the slimmer console, the disc drive can play all PS5 games, most PS4 games, and other Blu-rays.
It's a very busy month for PlayStation hardware with another big launch coming in less than a week. The PlayStation Portal launches on November 15 and despite being mocked by many when revealed, the handheld device is sold out almost everywhere. There were pre-orders left at Walmart a few days ago, and while it's worth checking to see if there are any left, my guess is they'll be all gone by now.
PlayStation also opened pre-orders for its Pulse Explore Earbuds and Elite Headset this week. The earbuds will ship next month and then the headset releases in February. PlayStation clearly wants as many people as possible to own a PS5 by the time we leave 2023 behind for 2024. As for those who already own a PS5, the push by PlayStation is to make sure you all own as many of the new accessories made just for it releasing over the coming months.
